Hello,
I am in the process of buying a purpose built German trailer to carry four dogs in and am trying to establish exactly what the ITV laws are concerning a trailer.
Going through all the fairly old posts, it is suggested that if it is somewhere between 500kg and 750kg, one does not need an ITV test.
Trouble is I cannot find here which weight is correct and if that weight is fully laden or kerb weight unladen :-(
Does anybody have any up to date info please and if not, could anybody point me in the right direction (apart from an ITV centre).
The German supplier who are the largest manufacture in Europe does issue paperwork to assist registration, but has simply advised me that need or otherwise "doesnt depend on the axles, it depends on the ITV person" which sounds about right, doesnt help me much!

hi, the trailor needs to be homolagated in Spain to be legal being towed by a spanish car. UK plates you are fine but spanish plates on car your trailor needs to be legal in spain. Its on the makers plate usually near the hitch.
I am pretty sure its 750kg to not need separate red plates. Thats the trailor weight plus whats on top.
The fine in UK for being overweight is 1 GBP per kg so I suspect Spain is something similar, plus it is impounded till it is made safe.
Best get some proper advice from a gestor or go to ITV yourself - they are v helpful.
Hope it helps.

Poolboy is correct, Spain is strong on protectionism (illegally so )so its not viable to buy a trailor outside of Spain ,the ITV wont even accept UK tow bars even when CE marked

Slight drift, when I ITVd our Toyota to change to Spanish Registration I took it to the ITV station to find out what arrangement they would be happy with for the high intensity rear light. The man was pretty easy going about the light but very agitated about the heavily black tinted glass UNTIL he found the CE marking then it was OK !

All non standard parts have to homolagated when you fit them to a Spanish car , homolagation is Spains version of the German TUV and CE approval , Spain dose not recognise CE approval on car modified/upgraded parts even though it means approved for use in the EU , the authorities here act illegally but what can you do about it?

As long as it is under 750kg you are ok, but would check with your insurer to see if it will be covered under your currant policy as they sometimes are sometimes excluded or require extra cover.
It is still very much one rule for one and one for another, saw a large twin wheel trailer at one of the markets with Spanish traders and there were no red plates in site.

actually if under 750kg but not spanish homolagation you are unlikely to be stopped but if you have an ins claim trailor related the insurer won't cover you.
Pretty much any excuse for the coverer to withhold payment & you are on yr own. Just not worth the risk for a couple of hundred euros.
I'd buy a used legal trailor on segundamano.es & drive without cringeing when you see the guardia c.
