We went there many years ago, and there was lots of waste land between the town and Arenal, not too built up, we enjoyed it and went back for several years in a row. But then they started filling it all with apartment blocks and ruined it IMHO. I realise we can't stand still, change is inevitable, but for me it became like so many other Spanish coastal resorts that we went to Jávea to avoid. We have tended to spend more time Costa de la Luz way lately, but even one of our favourite areas, Valdevaqueros, has plans for lots of new dwellings and hotel complex. There is a huge protest going on, and for the moment planning permission has been denied. (the local mayor is livid, he can see his backhanders disappearing). Spain seems to have a death wish, they won't be happy until they have covered the whole coast in concrete. The fact that they have just passed a law to allow buildings within 50m of the beach seems to reinforce that.

To my mind there is a trade off between weather and beauty when it comes to living on Spain's coast. The most beautiful and unspoilt mainland coastlines are on the Atlantic side, but you won't get so much sun there. There are also some fantastic coastlines in the Balearics and there are still stretches of the mainland med coast that are relatively unspoilt (Girona comes to mind, as well as the Costa de la Luz) but they are becoming very rare these days.
There is still plenty of sun to have a great summer holiday in the North of Spain among secluded coves, lovely villages and stunning beaches (and way better food), but Brits choose not to do so
Actually, thinking about it, the North of Spain is rubbish, I urge all tourists to not bother coming!

Many Spanish live in the cities in winter and then head out to the pueblo or beach for summer. Rather than having one expensive residence where they live all year round they have something more functional in the city, and then a cheaper holiday home for the summer. Many Brits complain about build quality on the coast, and a lot of it is indeed pretty poor, however a lot of houses were only designed to be summer residences. The "ghost village" syndrome occurs all over Spain - places are heaving in July and August, and completely deserted in winter.
I've been to Javea many times and from April to October it has always seemed a nice place to be (we've never been there in August or winter though). I've never noticed Brits drinking lager at 9.30 in the morning though, it has never struck me as that kind of place (maybe it changes in August), and I've always found the food there to be reaonably priced and of decent quality, especially considering it's a tourist area.

And no decent music and dancing, just some old biddies in fancy dress and clackers. Empty beaches and lots of rain.
They come to Benidorm instead, and who can blame them?

I do not exaggerate and certainly not making a point it is just as is. Equally it happens in Northern France when they get off the overnight boats. It happens.
I wonder (SNIP) should I take a photograph not far from Deutsche bank!
Of course you live in the Port area? Do not suppose you have to come up this way to do banking in that there seems to be banks in the port area or at least savings banks?

I like Javea and if I move from my town and stay in Spain that is where I would head.

So lets put the blame where it really should be laid. It is not the place but the people behaving badly, namely young brits, shame we all get tarred with that brush. When I talk to my friends about stereotypes they always say that brits are heavy drinkers, that is the image that they all have of us.

Rosemary you love Javea absolutely respect your views I do not it is quite simple it has not worked out for us and I miss France. People say France is wonderful pity about the French. Again along your lines of argument stereotypes. My experience of 35 years of living and travelling in France runs contrary to that view. They are arrogant and expect yes that is the word for you to speak French. But I believe rightly or wrongly that integration and understanding is better brought about by at least having a smattering. Even you must agree that you could live in Javea for years and not need to speak Spanish?

I was chatting today to a fellow Welsh couple who have lived here for over 32 years. Stop have had a house here for 32 years and they live at Moraira and come and go. They love it here but equally have a lovely place in Worcestershire.

When I lived in Javea, Arenal wasn't a bad place, it's where the tennis courts were. I lived in the mountains further along, BAM is what the area was called, a beautiful place it was.
To get back to the early pint drinkers, I never came across them. I used to see the ones in need, mostly elderly Spanish former fishermen and long term expats in the port where several Spanish bars opened early to cater for them.
They would order a coffee and a triple brandy, and would need at least two triple brandies before they dared to reach for the coffee cups.

HBG.. I live in Balcon al Mar(BAM) and although you can never say never, I don't intend ever leaving here, I absolutely love it
I'd be shocked if anyone ever moved to Javea and didn't know how much busier it gets in the Summer, the briefest of internet searches would tell you that so it shouldn't really come as a shock to anyone.
