Good article and I can really relate to this bit:
Speaking with Spaniards, I hear myself making statements just so I can make a statement or asking questions that aren’t quite the question I’m trying to ask.

Happens to me all the time. I tried to make conversation with two Spaniards sitting at an adjoining table yesterday and they both gave me a dirty look, finished their beers and walked away. I noticed that one of them seemed to be talking to his wrist watch.
My wife filled me in. 'They're from the organised crime squad in Alicante, you silly sod.'
(She's an interpreter).
I'm sure they weren't after me, but I drove round a couple of roundabouts twice to make sure I wasn't being followed. Funnily enough, after I parked my car in the driveway, I noticed a helicopter high in the sky.
