Default Temporary residency

Hi, we are a semi-retired couple (late fifties) holidaying in Spain i.e. we are not entitled to a pension for several years... unfortunately. Having read various sites, including UK gov, we're unsure if a tourist's 3-month max stay in Spain is our annual "entitlement". If we leave after this period and return to the UK for, say, at least 3 months, is an immediate return to Spain legal i.e. to stay for another 3 months before leaving... and is this cycle repeatable as long as we reside in the UK for MORE THAN 6 months?
Has anyone compiled a recent in-depth "should do/don't do" checklist for would-be temporary residents in Spain (taking into account any recent changes to UK and Spanish law etc)? We realise there's a lot of great advice within the forum but if there is a particularly good guide/source, we'd like to read it asap. Thanks.

What you refer to as temporary resident is signing on the Foreigners Register in Spain which should be done if your stay is over 90 days. However to sign this register you have to comply with the same rules as for residency, hence more than a few people forget to do this. If I am reading right you want to say spend 2 x 3 month periods per year in Spain and the remainder of the year in UK? Or a number of longer stays in Spain but none exceeding 3 months and not in total more than 183 days in Spain? You can certainly do that without any residency or tax issues. In fact to get round the 90 day rule you don't even need to return to UK a day or more in Portugal or France would reset the clock for the 90 day rule. However the 183 days is a total over a calendar year.

Hello bobd22. Quick thank you for bothering to pass on your wisdom. Have had to change our Username to "Openwaterswimus" as our previous choice was an actual domain name... oops! So until sorted by the Ms we were exiled. Professionally and courteously managed though. We didn't know about the 183 days annual entitlement. Do you or anyone know of and would recommend an idiots guide to temporary-cum-permanent residency in Spain? Why reinvent the wheel if someone can list the MUST DOs and DON'T DO issues? Regards.
