Had the s<me problems when we were there, but it was always Saturday and Sunday, when the families were all at home and using the internet, slowed everything down. Monday to Friday, speeds OK, Saturday and Sunday they dropped of dramatically, could get up to 6mb in the week, but less than 2 at weekends. I suspect that dongles would suffer the same thing.

I wouldn't even dare to defend Telefonica, it would probably cause a riot. But here's a cautionary tale.
We started off with Telefonica for our internet connection, and had lots of trouble with them. Then we changed over to Wanadoo, now Orange, which worked all right for a couple of years and then we had trouble and found that Wanadoo was even worse then Telefonica when it came to customer service.
With our tail between our legs we went back to Telefonica and have been with them ever since. I get a reasonably reliable six Mbts, but whenever it goes wrong, I don't bother with their customer service. I went out and bought myself a decent router and it works, most of the time.
The cautionary tale? It took weeks to change over each time and it wasn't cheap either. I've now got the private mobile number of a Telefonica technico and deal with him direct, for cash payments, of course. It's much cheaper than the official way and ten times as quick.

We had our speed cut to 1mb from 3 (not that we ever achieved more than 2.7) a couple of months ago. My husband had a similar reaction to the original poster of this thread and nearly threw the PC out of the window.
When we rang 'customer services' to complain they said we had to talk to the technical guys about it. Fine but thats not a free call and there's no english speaking technical service. Nevertheless our spanish is now just about up for this, so my husband called them. They said 1mb is the only service available in our area. My husband asked how come we used to have 3 and are paying for 3? The reply was that 3 is only available to businesses now and (guess what) - talk to customer services. We didn't bother, but did check their website and entering our post code, sure enough, 1Mb is the only package you can have around here now.
I agree it is sooooo slow, especially when you've been used to something faster.
However - there is some good news. Last months bill was only 19.99 euros for telephone and internet and this months is 45. Thats compared to just under 90 most months in the past.
So if you don't die of frustration, you should save some money!
Roll on the day when there is more competition that actually works.
