Which supermarkets dominate your area?

Which supermarkets dominate your area?
We seem to get a lot of Mercadona threads here, but in my part of Madrid they don't have any outlets.
The stores here are Dia (quite a few of those), Carrefour express, El Corte Ingles and various independents.

Re: Which supermarkets dominate your area?
Local rural villages the dominant supermarket is Coviran. I have to say that they are very fixed in their ways around us. e.g. won't/don't stock unsweetened greek yoghurt as "no call for it". Having said that I was astonished to see the same store a couple of weeks back with "expat stuff" e.g. Corned beef, Colmans Mustard, Chivers jelly and so on. maybe times are a changing. Great for fresh meat and chicken.
In the towns it is Mercadona without a doubt. Lidl does a good trade with Expats.
Granada has Carrefour and Alcampo. I always find them very souless. The few times I have tried Eroski, I found it to be significantly more expensive than other supermarkets.
So my answer would be overall- Mercadona

In our town centre we have 2 branches of Mercadona, 1 Mas y Mas (not nice, smells bad when you go in, staff are quite rude and usually only 1 check-out open), 1 Dia, 1 Supersol and a few Coviran smaller supermarkets scattered about. Lidl and the Eroski hypermarket are both out of town. The nearest Carrefour is in the Centro Comercial at Rincon de la Victoria.

Here, you won't find a Mercadona at all in Euskadi; the nearest one is Logrono, but I don't shed any tears. Other than Mercadona, there is Dia, Hiper Simply, Lidl & the odd Carrefour. But so what, they're nearly all the same price.
Surely life has more to offer than checking up on the latest deal from so & so.

Re: Which supermarkets dominate your area?
Where I used to live 12k west of Sevilla.
Supersol .... was a good one, far better than my now local one.
Dia Plus .... was much better after the re furb.
El Jamon ... Manky fruit and veg capital.
Mercadona arrived way down the other side of village huge store still not a fan of them.
Many small grocers tucked in little back streets with super fruit and veg.
Now I live in Ayamonte.
Supersol ... dirty smelly place.
El Jamon x 2 bigger one okay but some fruit and veg are rotten. Small one dirty smelly place but usually has Lurpak.
Dia .... other side of town seems okay.
Mercadona ...... out of town and okay.
Butcher meat and fruit and veg plus cakes and flowers from the Indoor market... Oh and cheese with friendly helpful staff and great quality produce.

In our town 2 Mercadona, 3 Dia markets which are quite small, 3 El Arbol, Lidl, and 2 Superdumbo (these are new and fantastic). We also have a group of independent small shops that have recently re branded together to try and keep going. There are also loads of older people selling local fresh produce including pigeons and rabbits on doorsteps and out of garages this is very fresh as you see the old men walking back from their huertas with it every morning.

Re: Which supermarkets dominate your area?
There are 4 Mercadonas within walking distance of me in Arganzuela. However I don't see them much in other parts of central Madrid. Dia is the most common, also AhorraMas, Supermercados de Madrid, the odd SuperSol and Coviran are near me. Near my office in central Madrid there are quite a few Caprabos, an OpenCor, an Eroski, a Carrefour Market and a full Carrefour further up the road. Also there are Al Campos, Carrefours, and Hipercors further out.

In our pueblo, a recently opened small Dia - doesn't seem up to much but at least it has pre-packaged meat and veg you can choose yourself rather than have to wait to be served. There are a couple of independents with meat counters and veg counters but you have to wait and can't choose your own and the meat is very expensive.
Hour and a half round trip every week or so to the big shops - Lidl and Mercadona (then Carrefour but only if absolutely necessary).
Those three are the big ones around here with the odd Supersol and Supercor thrown in.

Re: Which supermarkets dominate your area?
in this village we have
1 Dia - seems to be the shop of choice for most of the village since it opened a year ago
1 Paqui - used to be the shop of choice
at least 2 Coviran but only used by those who live really close
at least 2 "other" but only used by those who live really close
we had a Spar but it wasn't very busy and Dia sounded the death knell inside 3 months
in the village 15km at the bottom of the hill they have all the usual suspects but also a Mercadona we go to
In Granada 33km away also 2 Carrefor, Supercor and all the usual suspects providing local shopping
like others we have certain items we save for a "special" shop, so every 4-6 weeks go to Alcampo - the BH can fill her car with petrol at a good discount, but my car doesn't like their petrol so now use the main stations like BP - its still cheaper than the £800 it cost to have the carburation system cleaned and rebuilt after a long period on Morrisons in the UK.

Consum for me, although we have a big new Mercadona, slightly cheaper, and a Dia, less choice, but they all seem to get there fair share of business.
Amazing for what is basically no more than a village, though they obviously pull in lots of punters from many miles around.

Mercadona is the most successful supermarket in Spain and consistently offer the cheapest shopping baskets as assessed by the people that do that sort of stuff.
They seem to be expanding at a huge rate. When we were first in Spain 20 years ago they were in many towns, usually in small locales under apartment blocks.
It is all changing now. Last year they built a new store in our local town, Almuñécar, which is a single story store with 260 parking spaces under the store. The spaces are the biggest I have seen in any store. They have 14 checkouts.
They are about to open a similar store in Nerja, 15km away, within the next month. They now have a similar store a further 10km up the road towards Málaga. There seems to be no limit to their expansion at the moment.
They must be doing something right!
Eroski, on the other hand, have said that they are selling their stores in Andalucia. I can't see too many buyers in the frame apart from possibly Alcampo, who have a couple of big stores down here and I think are looking to expand. They are huge in France under the Auchan brand.
For the moment Mercadona seem to be cleaning up in the towns with their relatively small outlets. It will be interesting to see if they go for the Hypermarket approach with non food sales like the other big companies.
