Many years ago when my husband was at school and doing his woodwork GCE he was asked what was meant by the term clenching a nail.....
His reply to this was.... bray th'end ower, he then of course had to explain to the tutor that he meant bend the end over.

It's like a foreign language for the uninitiated.

This thread is beginning to make me feel old.
Do you remember shopping before supermarkets existed, going from counter to counter. Perhaps we should start a new thread. What makes you realise you are getting older?

A few of the more common N.E. ones still in use,...
Charkin on the bleezer,
Pallatic, Nettie, Marra, Pernickety, Gowk, Femmer, Galluses, Plodge, Gully, Flumoxed, Breeks, Teem, Hadaway.
Nee googling and Fredbargate excluded due to unfair advantage.

That's interesting.
Apart from a few towns, the N.E. was very sparsely populated before the industrial age began.
When they started coal mining big-time there was a huge influx of miners from all over the UK, including a large number from Lancashire as well as Cornwall, Scotland and Ireland whose dialects mixed in with those already present such as some of Viking origin.
