Spanish resident but with UK registered vehicle in the UK taxed, insured & MOT'd
OK, guys not sure if any of you have done this....
I have a car back in the UK that has been off the road for a few years and I'm about to put it back on the road.
Now that covid is over I will be popping back every 4 to 6 weeks for a weekend break.
On balance I have decided it is going to be more cost effective to get my own vehicle back on the road rather than getting a hire car every time I go there.
Not sure what has happened there but I travelled there a few weeks ago and car hire cost me a fortune!!!
So anyway, the car came out of its last MOT and then went straight into storage so just will need to charge the battery or replace it and off I go, except....
- Insurance required
- Traded my UK driving licence for a Spanish one
Anyone any experience of getting insurance under these circumstances?

Is it legal for the opposite here in the EU? I do not know... A lot of opinions and it does not affect me...
Just go to an insurance broker. they will insure you ie. take your money but a claim is another situation from what i have heard 2nd hand thru EU based forums dealing with islanders in the opposite situation as you..
Maybe give dlva a call - i hope that is correct - try to find a payphone to call them..You left the island and became a resident elsewhere, now you want the same benefits as an tax paying, resident islander so be careful with your inquires.

Hola
I you have swapped your UK driving licence for a Spanish licence, then you are not allowed to drive a foreign car as in a UK number plate - the theory says you must change the car to Spanish.
If you are not Spanish resident then you can exchange your driving licence to UK and your problem is solved - you simply become a tourist.

growinspain - Had you just got back from the boozer last night when you replied. I can't really figure out what your point is...
DFX - The car is to remain in the UK.
I just swapped my UK driving licence for a Spanish one. I do not live in the UK so am not entitled to a UK driving licence.
stevesainty - Thanks for that link. However, I have no problem driving in the UK on a Spanish driving licence.

Has the car been on SORN, you might be in some bother with DVLA if not.
Your biggest problem though will be with insurance as being non UK resident you will find it extremely difficult to find an insurer willing to cover you.
A better idea might be to 'sell' the car to a friend or relative in UK and have them put it on the road with you as a named driver on the insurance.
Of itself holding a Spanish licence is a non issue and no bar to driving in the UK.

DVLA have been informed that the vehicle is currently off the road.
I did get insurance in the UK as a non resident in the past but want to learn from others if they have experience with this issue also.
Good idea about selling it but if I had an accident they they would take a hit as it was on their policy so I think that one is a no-goer for that reason.

Most UK insurance polices state in the terms and conditions that the policyholder must be resident in the UK.
I believe that these days most insurers also insist on you sending them a copy of your driving licence.
Have you tried this guy https://www.stuartcollins.com/
He specialises in insuring UK cars for use in the EU but I believe the policies also cover UK use.
No doubt other similar providers exist and I have no connection with the above business and am not recommending it, just saying that options exist.

EuroTrash, the reason for my query on this forum is I am clearly stating that I am searching for insurance as a non UK resident, otherwise it would be a doddle to get insurance.
I have been insured by Stuart Collins in the past and it was not cheap!
I will shop around and get a number of quotes as it seems nobody on here has been in this boat, which I find surprising.

I suppose that any "niche" insurance is going to add a bit on. just because it can. Anyway, hope you find something.
