Spanish Documentry

Has anyone else been watching this fantastic programme on TVE channel 802? "España, entre el cielo y la tierra" :)
Unfortunately it does not start now until 01:30 GMT on Sunday morning, so for me living in Spain it is even worse, but I strongly recommend it, 48 minutes or so of the most fantastic and beautiful scenery, mostly filmed from helicopter flying low.

The Spanish wildlife programme presented by Michael Portillo is great as well. Cannot remember which channel or when, caught it by accident !

Re: Spanish Documentry

Hola y buenos dias,
Hooray! At last, someone else has seen this brilliant program! Espana, entre el cielo y la tierra, was made in 2005, I think, and has around 15 episodes. I refer to the information site for TVE(internacional), because, as you say, the screening timetable is variable: www.rtve.es/tve/programo/avan3/tv3_fr.htm
Also, El Mundo newspaper is offering copies of the episodes on DVD for 11.90 euros every Monday, since when, I'm not sure. However, there is a man in Valladolid selling 2 copies of the Valladolid - Salamanca, and the Burgos - Soria routes on e-bay.
Michael Portillo made a documentary of his personal journey to Salamanca where I believe his father studied, or was a professor. It was quite interesting.
Regards & happy viewing,
Carol

Re: Spanish Documentry

Maybe I ought to copy of my DVD's and sell on Ebay then! nice to know how many episodes there are, I have about eight.

Nice to hear that others are watching, will have to see if I can find out when it is on earlier, the other night it said 6pm on Sunday. No it was not.

My favourite episode so far is the Sierra Nevada, but then I am biased as that is so close to me.

Hola pwwm,
Ooh! I'll bring the popcorn/chicharrones for the next screening! ;)
I think the tve schedule was out of sync due to the press coverage of the funeral of the spanish actress/singer Rocio Durcal. Durcal pueblo is near your area, I believe. How's the weather today in the sierras?

Carol

Hi pwwm,
Wish I could say the same for here in sunny, but chilly Scotland. Temp. today will reach a stunningly warm 8 degrees C, if you shelter out of the biting north wind! Fresh & invigorating!

Hello again,
Just noticed that there'll be a showing tonight on TVE internacional (well, 1.30am GMT) of the "Espana, entre el cielo y la tierra" documentary - el Duero (Burgos - Valladolid). Another two episodes tomorrow evening (4.15pm - not sure of the title) and 7.10pm (GMT) from El Mar Menor to Costa Tropical. Sky tv guide, and the TVE (i) program timetable show conflicting information. But, there is usually a Sunday program around these times.
Regards,
Carol

Hi pwwm,
Yup, you were forwarned! I fell asleep infront of the tv, watching the period drama/soap (Amar en tiempos revueltos), and woke up thinking, "Hey, where's the helicopter?" Turns out to have been another documentary at 4.10 "La ruta de la plata" which follows a roman route from Gijon in the north to Extremadura (I think). Today's program was about Merida and Almendralejo (Extremadura). Merida has some fantastic roman ruins, well worth a stopover. I'm glad I woke up in time!
Back to the gardening... :)

I don't know whether it's the same programme. But Channel 4 showed a very similar thing a few years ago called "Flight over Spain". It seemed to be filmed from a ballooon.

Hi Bigwheels

This is filmed from a helicopter, I have heard about the programme you talk about, but this is quite new, last year I think.

Will have the timer on yet again, hopefully Ayamonte for those of you in that area, next logical step anyway.

Re: Spanish Documentry

When I first moved to Spain I made a real effort to watch Spanish TV for obvious reasons, even though I found it a real chore at times.

When we moved apartment, we decided to get Cable TV installed which was a real treat at the time. Sadly I found myself getting addicted to UK programmes and never again did I switch Spanish TV. Even my morning coffee with Spanish news was replaced with Sky news or GMTV. If i'm honest it's so much easier for me to watch English TV. I have to concentrate a lot more on the Spanish channels and I can only put this down to laziness. My Spanish has deteriorated due to this.

We have just moved again this weekend and we are without Satellite or Cable TV. We have decided that we can both live without this for a while, especially as the summer is approaching and we watch a lot less TV in the summer. Also the summer TV lisitings are never the best.

Therefore, as a 'newby' to Spanish TV (again) it is interesting to know of any good programmes that you can recommend. I really like to have the Spanish subtitles on at the same time as I learn so much more this way.

I normally get in from work at approx 20.00 so I miss all the daytime TV. I particulary like quiz shows, cookery programmes and documentaries like the one mentioned. I find a lot of Spanish TV is not worth watching like the 'it's a knockout' type TV shows that were showing in the UK in the 70's.

I guess I need to learn all over again :)

Carol&John Apr 18th 2006 9:01 am

Re: Spanish Documentry

Hi sunnysenorita,
I didn't know there were spanish subtitles. I thought most films were dubbed?
Hmm, let's see what's on after your work shift:
"Cine de barrio" (older films, some corny ones) with Carmen Sevilla on a Saturday night? She's like everybody's favourite auntie; who needs to speak spanish when her hands do all the talking? :) Sunday evenings sometimes have more modern films (including ones directed by P. Almodovar); check the timetable/tv guide posted earlier on in this thread.
Cookery programs are on earlier/weekdays (6-ish/7pm spanish time), but the one with Jose Andres (Vamos a cocinar con J.A...) is simple and very easy to follow. He even takes you to the mercado!
"Espana directo" (a bit like Newsround) 6pm-7pm -ish, "Gente" (like "Hola" on TV), and "Telediario" (the news, both on throughout the day).
"Mira quien baila!" is like "Come Dancing" on evenings, too.
Enough already, you'd think I had nothing better to do than watch TV? :o
Regards,
Carol

Re: Spanish Documentry

Tee hee Carole, I've not got square eyes either! :D

The subtitles are really meant for the deaf and these are on page 888. For example last night I watched the film 'Made in Manhatten', which is dubbed as you say but I find that the subtitles really make life easier for me and are great for learning to spell.

Obviously not all programmes have subtitles, look either on the teletext page or in the newspaper.

As I am in the process of moving still, I have managed to finish work early for the last two days and have been watching (whilst unpacking of course ;) ) 'Rubi' which is a soap on Tele 5 (I think) and is subtitled. Not my ususal choice of viewing but some how these seem easier to watch in Spanish.

I have seen 'Vamos a cocinar' and enjoyed it. I caught the tail end of 'Gente' last night (which is not subtitled) which again I quite liked.

Thanks for the other recommendations which I will look out for.

Where are you Carole?

Bye for now :D xxxxx

Hi again,
I'm still here in sunny, yet a wee bit chilly (slightly warmer since my last post  ) Scotland. Hoping to visit Ayamonte (in western Costa de la luz) this summer, if not sooner...
It's BBQ spare ribs on the menu tonight with Jose Andres. ;)

Amazing, In Scotland but still tuning in to Spanish TV.

I missed the BBQ ribs. Would have liked to have seen that as we had our first barbie last week and am looking for new recipes.

I was a tad disappointed with Spanish TV last night, really not much on at all. Hope it's better tonight.

Sabado Noche - that's one for my viewing list.

Did either of you try the subtitles yet on teletext page 888?

:D

I expect you all know about this but it was a new discovery to me - on Spanish TV3 you can change the Sound/Mode to have it in the original version. Most of the UK/USA films tend to be shown pretty late at night, though. Any station that shows the sign "Dual" when you first turn to it can do this. Unfortunately for me, TV3 is the only one that I seem to be able to get in the Alicante Province.

Hi All,
I guess "Sabado noche" is on another channel, not TVE(internacional), 'cause can't see it on the schedule. It's the only spanish channel I can get on Sky.
"Espana, entre el cielo y la tierra" returns for another EARLY episode about Catalonia (Catalunya?) from the Pyrenees.
Tonight, Jose Andres has "Especial Andalucia" ;) Might be a surprise!
Saturday night has a "Gala de la Rioja" with an assortment of singing celebrities...
Oh well, better get out into the garden, "someone" has turned up the outdoor thermostat - it's positively glorious outside! :)

Carol

Did you see this weeks episode yet? it was around the Gerona area, I have only seen a small part as the storm here was so bad that our electrics etc blew, but it looked rather good.
Shame they did not go around Ayamonte as we had hoped they might this week.
So far they have always or seemed to follow a pattern around Spain. Maybe later.

Re: Spanish Documentry

Hola pwwm!
Missed it yet again - I keep forgetting to set the timer! :o
Sounds like most of Andalucia has had a storm passing through these last few days. The storms in the Alpujaras (is Albunol in the Alpujaras?) are fairly intense - almost like touching the clouds! We drove along the road from costa tropical to Granada (in April two years ago), and, near the dam, hailstones the size of golf balls fell from the skies! Several cars had to pull over to the side of the road...
There's a movie on tonight, and Jose is cooking ravioli... :)
Regards,
Carol

HI Carol

As you quite rightly say, yes we have had rather large storm over the weekend with large hailstones, today it is still very cloudy. The hills here in town were absolutley running with water, thanfully we live in teh hill overlooking town and I drove through it all, cars was clean now rather mud spattered.

Off to UK Thursday so me other half had better remember to record this weeks for me.
Keep well, oh now the fire works have strted...................

OOH I was not aware of this. Do you have to have any special equipment to get the original versions? Sounds a bit techincal for me. :scared:

Carole - i've been watching Jose (with subtitles too). Did you see the consume? Very impressive but a bit too time consuming for me unfortunatley. I'll stick to the basics until i retire or marry a rich man. :)

pwwm - It was my birthday last weekend so I was out on the tiles  still not seen Sabado Noche. I have plans for this Sat too so i'll have to keep you posted on that one.

On TVE1 last night I watched 'Mujeres Desesperadas' (desperate housewives) and after that there was a Spanish sitcom called 'Con dos tacones' (with two heels?). Both quite girly programmes but boyfriend was out watching football so was able to have full command of the TV in the bedroom.

Hope to be able to advance on to documentaries etc soon :o , am still getting back into the swing of this Spanish TV.

Adios for now xxxxxxxx
