Spanis banking- I don't believe it!

We used to bank with Banesto however it was totally inconvenient as the branch was 80k away. They were taken over by Santander this year, Bingo!
Off to our local branch of Santander just up the road, we asked them to close the old account at the old branch and open us a new account at theirs, which they were happy to do, changing over our direct debits at the same time.
So this week we get a red bill from the electric company, so we logged in to our online account something we don't take notice of really. The direct debits were not transferred to the new account, but we now had TWO accounts listed, one with a -95€ balance.
On checking it, it was our old account and even though all the cash was removed and transferred to the new account, the old branch has still attempted to take out payments for debit cards we have never had and that quaint 'check' they are supposed to do that ensures we are still non resident customers!
We'll be calling in this coming week to the new branch, but where do we stand with the old branch trying to take money from an account that was supposedly closed?

They finally said I had to pop into the branch to present myself to them and close it personally. I told them that I was 1200 miles away and wouldnt be popping in anywhere.
A direct debit was then taken from the account, making it overdrawn.
My last phone call and mail consisted of a message telling them that they could leave the account open for as long as they liked, but that I was taking no responsibility for any direct debits or charges to the account, and they would basically we using their own money to fund it.
Two days later the account was closed
They finally said I had to pop into the branch to present myself to them and close it personally. I told them that I was 1200 miles away and wouldnt be popping in anywhere.

Well as we are here and our new account is with them I don't think that approach will work. Wha'ts got me worried is any charges they rack up on the old account, once they realise there is a second new one, nothing to stop them dipping in to it and removing cash!
So hopefully will catch our new bank open before they close for summer holidays- the branch only has one member of staff!
