Free - well I had my ears syringed for free, some friends had their baby delivered for free and another had a mild heart problem. The treatment was free but the medicines had to be paid for as did the taxi back from hospital. the ambulance going was covered by his insurance.
I think if you had an emergency you would get treated for free but if you have an endemic problem, for example another friend had on going knee joint problems anad this sort of thing is not treated by the local gp or free.
No doubt others on this forum can advise better because we have rarely had travel insurance and fortunately have had no serious health issues - so far!!
and a lot of his posts are very tongue in cheek so dont let him upset you

Good, Spain is not the Antartida, but neither it is Cuba. The winters in Spain are cold, but in the south area they are more " benign ". Although this depends. I am from Murcia (southeast of Spain) and I have gone at dawn to the work, and toward a " benign " temperature of 2 C º, the cars were full with frost and the water was absolutely frozen. But I speak at dawn, later makes something of sun and it is not so cold. But when makes wind, the wind it is frozen. And I speak of the southeast of Spain. I have put benign among quotation marks because in places as Madrid or Albacete the winters are very serious, is strange if here doesn't snow, and I no longer want to speak of places as Teruel, Soria or León, where there are siberian winters, with temperatures of -16 to -20 Cº
In the coast, and mainly in the south area (La Manga, Mar Menor, etc etc etc) the climate is good in winter, La Manga is usually also the place of training of the english selection in the winter season
But it is necessary to go to the coast, because the interior is colder. Places like Caravaca in the county of Murcia are different to the rest of the region, because when having more height, there it snows every winter, or Sierra Nevada in Granada, is a authentic freezer in winter. 2 or 3 years ago 3 british citizens died there when not obeying the orders of a forest guard. The son of one of these men survived of pure miracle

It's similar to the UK - a doctor will write you a prescription and you take it to a farmacia who give you your medicine. If you know what antibiotics you take, bring them with you - if you show them to the pharmacist in the farmacia they may give them to you without a prescription.
For your dog, get a tick collar. It lasts longer and is effective. If the dog does have ticks, it will have a large female one (or more) and a tiny black male one. To remove the male ones just knock them off. To remove a female that has been feeding, you must twist it off ANTI-CLOCKWISE. This removes the jaws as well.
I know what you mean about health insurance and existing conditions, but it is important. Your health card will cover just emergency treatment - once the emergency has passed you will be charged. Here's an example of what can happen when you don't bother with cover:

Just the cost of repatriation? He needs specialist transport to come home - that's £5,000 he obviously doesn't have. The British Consul may be helping the family, but not with the cost.

You can buy a tick remover from pet shop & vets about 3 quid. If you use the frontline combo then that will kill ticks as soon as they feed from your pet.( ie withing 24 - 48 hours) As for male & female ticks I don't know about that. The animals we have in at work covered in ticks have all big white feeding ticks so they must all be female!!! never seen any other kind..
