Neither of those terribly exciting for kids - mind you depends on their age/interests.

How long are you taking OP, and how old kids and what interests?

When I did that trip I stopped at Jerez. Then followed a minor road which went up over the mountains. No idea what road number it was. The scenery was fantastic but there was very little by way of stop off points. I drove for many miles without seeing another vehicle or house.

Tarifa not exciting for kids? ... follow the signs for Punta la Paloma between Bolonia and Tarifa you will come across a sand dune 200 metres up the road. Park up and climb the sand dune...when I took a visiting family up there in December the kids couldn't be dragged away from jumping off the top of the dune (prepare to "de-sand" kids before letting them back in car...hanging them upside down by the ankles and shake is quite effective for this task, remember to turn right way up when eyeballs start to bulge).

When you near Gib pop up to the castle at Castellar (find the Balcon de los amorosos when inside the castle for the best view in Andalucia).

incidentally Bolonia also has a nice sand dune to climb...it also has an area of Roman ruins and a small modern museum attached (entrance free to EU citizens upon proof of nationality...passport, driving licence).

Some important information when approaching Tarifa there is a petrol station on the left DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO CROSS SOLID LINE AND TURN INTO IT FROM THE RIGHT HAND CARRIAGEWAY...Guardia Civil trafico patrols often hang around waiting for people to do this..If you really want to go into the petrol station go 200 metres past and turn back

EllisG's sand dune sounds wonderful and I take back what I said as one of those ridiculous generalisations! At 8 & 4 I can imagine it would be one of their preferred options

Apart from miles of beach, as there is all along that coast, I don't think Trafalgar would be much of an attraction for kids, there's a lighthouse there but I doubt that would keep them amused! Agree with the dunes bit (in the absence of much else), huge dune at Bolonia, also more at Playa Valdevaqueros that should easily tire them out. Great part of the coast for the older people, loads of surfing, wind surfing etc, but lots of wind means you can easily end up getting sand blasted. We quite like it down there, but there's not a lot of organised entertainment for kids, just the beaches.
