Not unless the law has changed it isnt. I am talking specifically about autonomos here. |

(I have never heard about 'autonomo' (self employed )being in exclude so I cannot comment either way. I will ask next week when I am working at the National Police Station). "signing on the residents list.' I assume you are referring to the Padron. That is the list of residents maintained by the town hall. It is a requirement for people living in a municipality to register; it has nothing to do with residencia. (http://ukinspain.fco.gov.uk/en/help-...n-spain/padron) Explained fully HERE Technically residency or the "residencia" no longer exists. In 2007 an EU directive forced the old system of “extranjero†residency cards to be abolished. These cards were obligatory if you were a permanent resident and had to be produced on demand by the holder (nowadays you should carry a passport or a copy as your ID). The new system obliges foreigners to register on the “Registro Central de Extranjeros†(“Foreigners’ Registerâ€) if they intend to live in Spain longer than 90 days. Once on the register you get a certificate to prove it with your NIE number, name, address and date of birth on. The certificate is commonly referred to as a residencia or a residency certificate but does not say anywhere on it that the holder is resident just that he or she is on the register. |

I am talking specifically about autonomos here. Non EU members get a residencia card, EU members now get a residencia certificate (instead of the card) complete with an NIE number if they didn`t already have one. This is still classed as your residencia and is needed when you sign on at social security and then at the local health centre amongst other places. My out of date card was refused, but my new certificate was acccepted when I registered as a pensioner. ;);) |

I am talking specifically about autonomos here. Even our local Guardia still call this piece of paper a residencia!!! I was informed that foreign autonomos are NOT exempt from this! |

I've checked and, as Mitzy says, it's a legal requirement to be signed on the 'register of foreigners' and get a certificate often referred to (perhaps incorrectly) as a 'residencia'.

I think Leroy Merlin may also have stock. I have seen a number of suppliers. Check out 'Carpets Marbella' in Google, several hits. |

Well .... it's all you can get, so I guess the answer is yes .... but it's not a new style NIE ... its a certificate to say you are on the foreigners list which incorporates your NIE number
Simon asked if it was all he needed (the thread starter) and I replied yes, and five pages later we have completed the circle & the answer is of course yes. I say new style as it is different from the old NIE we all had before many of us change to the residencia card, that as we all know is now finished and we had to obtain (so we were told) a new style NIE, a different colour, photo needed this time. |

It is a certificate including your NIE number that is required by law and needed as proof of residing in Spain by most government offices here. You will struggle with getting future paperwork here if you do not show one when requested. Two totaly different things, although now they are on the same sheet of paper. ;);) Life is never simple when it concerns paperwork in Spain. There was a good video posted on here about the pain of paperwork needed. :) |

We got a bank account and bought a house before ever we got our NIE. When we found out that you needed it we went and got it retrospectively. First off my accountant told me that every single scrap of paper needed my NIE number on it plus a fiscal number for all my customers. She was adamant about this. Most of my international customers won't give me their passport details and don't see why they should, so I have to put a driving license number in the box! Or failing that their customer number with me. I've told them that and they're happy with it. Just so long as boxes are filled. The long and short is that I'm generally a rule follower and a worrier. But since I've lived in Spain where there are even more rules... more than anyone could possibly get to grips with and still run a one-man(woman) business!! I'm learning that sometimes you have to relax and just do what it takes to satisfy whoever you come across on the day. |
