Well Prof.Nutt (well named),was sacked for a very good reason, since when it's been pretty obvious he had an axe to grind big time, so it's doubtfull if any survey he arranged could be looked on as serious independant research.
In any event it appears to focus mainly on individual self harm rather than harm and nuisance to others in public places, which is the main focus of the topic.

The same researchers claimed that knives were more dangerous than guns.... on the basis that more people have access to knives than guns... all statistics can be doctored... death is a little harder to cover up or explain away.

Not necessarily, as I remember my mother's death certificate lists 4 separate things...

Death is still death.

You obviously didn't listen to the discussion today about this on Radio 2 and just how misleading this data is?

My only point is (and always was) that the the "findings" of any resaerch are usually the "findings" funder wants. And yes I do agree smoking should be banned from public places, just wanted to make a point about the dangers of alcohol both to yourself and others. Truce :)

So take that up with someone who argued the point... I didn't.

Nutt didn't toe the party line, that's why he was sacked.

If you compare the deaths from alcohol and heroin, then you have to agree that alcohol is a sight more dangerous. It's also more addictive, I reckon.

You can OD 5 times on Heroin and walk away unscathed. Try that with alcohol or paracetamol and see how far you get.

He admitted on radio 2 this morning that the fact that more people drink and the ease of availability were contributing factors... and they had a doctor on who pretty much reiterated his comments.
