Sky Tv Reception
#1
Hi all,
Can any of you satellite savvy people explain to me why when I unplug the existing perfectly working set top box from the dish and plug in my Sky+ box I get no signal?
I would have thought they would have been a straight swap! reason is for the Disney channel and CN for the kids!
Any ideas?

you may need to help the sky boxes boot up.
when they boot up they look at the frequency 11778...which carries al the main data and info the sky box needs to boot up.
however, depeniding on location and dish size and time of the day, this frequency can be hard to receive.
you therefore tell the box to look at another frequency to get the information it needs to boot up....
process here
http://www.satandpcguy.com/Site/sky_...anca_spain.htm
if you do this process and you still get nothing then check all you cables and connectors.
the cable from the dish needs to be connected to INPUT1...(generlaly) this is the main input the box uses for watching - it uses INPUT 2 for recording....generally.
also, are you sure the sky+ box is working OK - can you try it on another system?
you can use a sky+ box with one cable, but you will not be able to watch one channels and recexord another at the same time.

As a side question, where is the existing stb getting its signal from? Is it uk freesat?

are you sure is it a satellite receiver and not a terrestrial (TV aerial) receiver?
What channels are you getting on it? - wil determine which satellite your dish is pointing to!?
Freesat receivers, Sky receivers and generic receiver will receive the same signals if the dish is pointing tot he main UK TV satellites - Astra 2 at 28 .2 to 28.5 degrees.
There is no seperate Freesat or Sky satellites - they both use the same frequencies....
Infact a Sky box without a Sky card will get exactly the same channels as a Standard Freesat box...!

what is the make and model of the exisiting STB? - you have not said so I dont know what you are currently getting!

I was thinking that perhaps the LNB was geared towards the stb and that sky wouldn't like it, could this occur?
Excellent site you linked to btw, thanks

for example if you are getting BBC World news you are not on the main UK TV satellite, as they have BBC News.
Or if you have Sky News but with no adverts then you are on Sky News International on Astra 1, not SKy News UK on Astra2
Ta. it is rather good isnt it!

by knowing what channels you are getting on your current setup we can determine which satellite you are pointing to...be it Astra 2(UKTV),. Astra 1 or Hotbird or another..
for example if you are getting BBC World news you are not on the main UK TV satellite, as they have BBC News.
Or if you have Sky News but with no adverts then you are on Sky News International on Astra 1, not SKy News UK on Astra2
if you are getting UK TV signals on your current box then there should be no problems in getting them on your Sky box...if your dish is not on UKTV satellites then your LNB may need a tweek.

If I wanted to change the LNB to a quad, is this expensive. I could fit the LNB and run the cables myself?

for smaller "offset" dishes (where the LNB is at an angle to the dish) 4 output LNBs can be around 50euros.
for larger "prime focus" dishes (where the LNB sits in the centre of the dish) a quad LNB can be around 100euros.

The regions your receive on 101, 102, 103, 104, 105 depend on the postcode of your sky card.
ITV 15(?) regions are split amongst 3 types of frequencies: astra 2d verticals (OK signal - same as most BBC1 regions), astra 2d horizontals (weak - same as BBC2) and astra 2bNorth (12402 Strong but needs a sky card).
For C4, most regions reception will be smilar to BBC2 - but you can get it 24/7 by scanning in the channels on frequency 12480 - tton4 does not need a sky card but the others do)
For C5, one region is on the same frequency as BBC2 and so reception will be as per BBC2. But scan 12422 h and you can get the other 3 Sky card versions.

Thanks mate!,
I think for the time being the way things are it would be more appropriate to stick with the stb as not having disney negates the whole point of having it and the £25 per month rental.
appreciate you time explaining though as it will be handy for the future.
As a side query , I see a lot of high gain terrestrial antennas around me. I this for spanish freeview? Quite fancy this to immerse the kids into things a bit more.
Thanks again

Usng a TV aerial and a TDT receiver (built in or set top box) you can receive around 30 digital Spanish channels.
Including the Disney CHannel - for free.
And as most of the porgrammes on it are from the US, you can change the audio soundtrack into English!
And I noticed that the TVE childrens channels CLAN have strated to do origianl language programming also.
If you already have a TV Aerial (and amplifier kit) then try and use that. There are no such things as seperate analogue and digital TV aerials....one aerial can receive either analogue or digital, its just the orientation that needs to be different.
check tdt1.com or tdt.es for frequencies and your nearest transmitter.
