There is a rumour going the rounds on the Sky/Digital TV forums that Sky are going to deactivate all cards and issue new ones early in 2008 because of the large number of "illegal" cards in operation outside of the UK.
They have already deactivated a load of FTV cards that were being registered in large numbers to a single UK address and sold on by dealers.
If your Sky card is legitimately registered at a UK address that you have control over then a card change will not be a problem. If you have a card that was supplied through another source then, if the rumour is true, then you may have a problem next year.

I do not understand why Sky do not legitimately supply to Europe. Surely it would be in their interests. As I also understand there is something being held at the European Parliament about free access throughout Europe for all digital tv channels.

there is a strong possibility that Sky are in the process of changing cards again...and as mentioned above any users who have the card at their own uk address should recieve the card OK. It is all those who use an agents address that may be affected and how many cards the agent can get to replace all those he has at one uk address.
Sky can broadcast over europe (eg sky news) as they own the copyright for those programmes as they make those programmes. The contracts they sign with other programme makers (ie fox and universal) state that they should only be made available to UK users. Similarly the contracts Canal+ sign with Fox and Universal state they can only broadcast to Spain. If Sky were prepared to buy the rights to show those programmes Europewide, fox et al would ask for a huge charge to cover what they would have otherwise got from Canal+. And of course your Sky subs would increase greatly to cover the cost of buying the rights for Europe wide.
Part of the EU "TV without frontiers" covers this, but also states that due to contracts with US producers it may not be possible. "TV without frontiers" also various other things like a set amount of advertising per hour over all euro TV states, standard rules on violence during kids TV hours (ie no more bull fighting on TVE during day times!). It also mentions the "freedom of information"from your own eurocountry, that you should have access to TV from your own country, which is covered by BBC World being available all over the world for free!!

it could be a battle between Sky Lawyers and Sky Accountants...Legit sale of cards and keep Virgin happy against extra subs money and profits from abroad...

Stupid question time.
How does one have a card registered to a UK address if you dont have one please?

i found this forum and decided to join to offer advice and clear up some misconceptions.
sunlover: contact your installer. i have recieved a number of calls from people whos cards have gone off in the past two weeks. It looks like a problem not with Sky, but the dealer who is supplying the cards to certain installers, especially where the clients are using the dealers UK address for a card and not their own address. or find another local installer and supply them with your own UK address for the card.
c4 and movies : these channels are located on the same satellite and the same beam...which has been on low power since around january. I have no idea if / when this will be sorted out, but Astra (who own the satellites) are doing a shuffle of satellites at the moment moving a satellite to the Sky satellite constelation (ITV interactive services have already booked space on this satelite ready for the Rugby World Cup)
C4+1 : is also in this satellite and beam so no real improvement.
Five: As mentioned there is a stronger Five available via Add Channels, 12422 H 27500, 2/3 - Five. Five US and Five Life are also on this frequency which will answer the fact that you can loose Five on 105 but still keep Five US and Life.
Channel numbers: Each your Sky update the channel numbers to remove slack and clear space for future channels. When a new channel opens they are allocated to number, one for the main channel and on for a "+1" service. After some months these channels with no "+1" service loose this second number. See Five US on 180 and Five Life on 182 - Five US+1 will be on 181 and Five Life+1 will be on 183.
E4: the main E4 is on the same beam as BBC and ITV and can go off during the evening. You can add E4 (Ireland) which is much stronger using add channels on 11565 V 27500 2/3
And as solarwhizz mentioned BBC and ITV are totally dependant on where you live....as we all know....
hope this managed to help and clear up a few things.....

We plan to move over to Ayamonte (on the Algarve border of South Spain) in Oct 2008. I am doing my forward planning for TV to enable my better half to follow her beloved Liverpool and sport in general.
I have found a website that shows contours of dish sizes for all regions of south Europe and odd as it may seem there is a bubble that suggests a 1.8 m dish will work OK but I am assuming that I will need the best quality dish and the most capable centre bit.
My sister has an old Pace 2006 C 1 which I understand to be the highest sensitivity of decoder and I thought I might bring that to get started.
Against my better judgement (I dislike Murdock that much) I will subscribe to Sky here now at my present address to get a contract in UK and allow for the compulsory 12 mth phone link to be operated. Then we should be ready to move.
My real question is if at some stage we want to upgrade to HD will we need any up grade to equipment other than a new UK contract and HD Box? Will Sky HD work in that part of South Spain?
Regards,
John.

I have a 1.8, and its not good. I think it may have something to do with the way its set up, but we lose BBC1 at 8 and struggle with many of the SKY movie channels, except SKY Premiere strangely.

Of course i can only say how it is in my area (Gandia) so you may be better off asking an installer in the area you are going to.

To the best of my knowledge, and I'll probably be completely wrong, HD is not available in Spain .... or so I was told by the guy who fitted my dish.

See my reply above re HD...if you are loosing your BBC1 at 8pm then there is something seriously wrong with your set up (either the status of your LNB , dish or receiver) but there are about 30 channels (including movies and the UK +1 channels, Hallmark, Sci Fi, SSports News, SSports Extra, Sky 2 and 3 to name a few) that do drop out for a hour or two and then return. Premier is on another satellite beam and so it is there all the time.
I lose ITV, BBC in the evenings at around 8, we record all the movie channels in the early hours because we cant get them in the evening and most of the day.
If not do you know someone up here that knows what they're doing.
The problem is that my original Portuguese dish fell off the roof and got damaged. The pic was perfect with that dish. Then the new dish the LNB struts didnt fit so he had to get new ones, and afterwards we have had these problems.
