Simple cremations both Spain and UK
#1
Morning all,
Does anyone have any indication or experience of arranging a policy that covers you for a simple cremation (no wistles and bells) that is valid in both Spain and the UK. One without hidden costs and that is secure and fully transferable should i ever return to the UK.
Many thanks,
Owen

Ive not heard of one that does both countries - I´d say a savings account or an investment account would be the best bet, and you are looking at around €3500 here in spain for a simple one.

We considered a funeral plan but came to the decision we would just keep an amount in savings to cover the cost when the time comes. I do though understand where you are coming from especially being on your own. When we looked into it both Avalon and Golden Leaves offered plans that covered both Spain and the uk. Both had basic through to more extensive plans. They aren't cheap but would give peace of mind.

I was going to say much the same - here in Valencia it was just 1500€ for a very basic cremation. Don't know why people are quoting such high figures if they only want a basic one.

I suppose funeral plans are being marketed as a way to buy peace of mind. It's tricky and confusing enough to arrange a funeral in UK, especially for the first time or first time in years. For expats in Spain, it's a way of taking the worry out of those left behind having to go through all legal channels to register death, notify the embassy, arranging funeral (which is usually done for the day or two after death), flowers and service (if desired), all in a country with very different rules and customs. Yes, it's a lot cheaper to arrange a simple funeral but a funeral plan is a way of lessening the worry for those left behind, either your spouse/partner in Spain (with minimum of Spanish) or relatives back in England for whom the whole procedure is completely alien. Also fees are payable straight after the funeral, in euro.

I agree about the language issues especially if there is no one in Spain to assist.

Obviously it depends on your personal preferences about a funeral/ memorial service, and if you have a preference at to where your remains will be placed, but if you have no family and/ or are concerned about cost then you should explore the possibility of donating your body to a medical school.

Medical schools don't accept every body donated for research, and you won't know until after you have died. Many funeral plans refund your money if your body is accepted.
