If you're only going to use it here, Yoigo is / was easily the cheapest for texts especially texts back to the UK. Calls are cheaper too. Coverage is fine in Málaga city, not sure about out in the wilds.

I only dropped them because whwn I went back to the UK for a visit the roaming didn't work so I felt cut-off for a couple of weeks.

my OH has HITS & they are really cheap

the biggest problem he has had though, was when we got a new movistar landline number he couldn't phone it from his mobile for nearly a month!!!!

whenever he called it he got a message that the number didn't exist

I have had a movistar PAYG sim for 7 years now but I am more aware now that it is expensive to make calls in Spain with this provider so I want to change to a cheaper one. However I do want to keep my number. Can this be done with the kind of provider described here?

yes, ask for a 'portabilidad' - it usually happens within a week.

You ask your new phone provider when you go to buy the card, and they request the number form the old one. They're not allowed to say no.

Carrefour.

http://www.carrefour.es/telecom/movil/prepago.html

It's good value, good coverage, simple contract. You just drop one in your trolley at check-out rather than getting bamboozled by commissioin eager sales staff. Ideal short term solution. You can keep your existing number if you're happy with the service. Good rates to the UK, and you can still use 'lease line' cards for cheaper overseas rates.

At the moment I have a wifi dongle with the 3 network. This makes me a wifi hotspot for up to 5 pc's. It only costs me £5 per month in uk but when I am visiting abroad it is very expensive; up to £1 per minute. It works with a sim just like a normal mobile phone. Has anyone got a similar dongle in Spain? Can I get an alternative spanish sim to use in my dongle that will make it as cheap in Spain as it is in UK?

Yes, Vodafone do, but it is very expensive. I now only use my iphone and find free wifi. More and more cafes, adn bars are offering wifi now.

I have a vodafone dongle from Portugal (best signal from there for this part of Spain). Works like yours I bet it is manufactured by Huawei they seem to be supplied by all the mobile phone companies. You would need to unlock the dongle to use another network sim with it. Easy to do with a phone just pitch up at any market stall in UK and they can do it. However Dongles may be more difficult. Has anyone done this? How easy is it? Where can it be done?
