Segmented (segmental?) marketing is another line of business entirely.
I am not necessarily advocating that as a panacea for all ills
Yes - if you wish to contact a German speaking community with a "German" product then you must advertise in German.
Conversely, I am getting a definite impression that advertising in Spain, in Spanish, would not reach the Brits who live here
Marketing has to be targetted - product to market and vice versa.
But....if you are not hitting the target then change the market.
If historically your product has been advertised in a particular market, why is that? Most products have more than one market place.
For example, in the UK a company that made advertising products (keyrings, desk pads, etc etc) advertised to marketing people. In adverse times they decided to take out whole page adverts in other market journals - and attracted more business than they had ever known. Making the jump from marketing journals to engineering journals was a big step - but it worked.! !
if you install swimming pools, it isnt just the Brits who have and use them. Believe it or not the Germans, the Norwegians and even
the Spanish have and use them. So why cut yourself off from a market place - unless as JL has suggested there are certain "niceties" about marketing in particular areas or markets.
But if you sell keyrings why not advertise them in other areas, why not enter into agreements with locksmiths to hold and advertise your products. Perhaps with a special insert by applying to a website or direct telephone.
There are very few products that are only one limited market focussed. Even endoscopes have more than one use, more than one market, and brilliant minds are looking at more potential alternative uses for bettering of mankind.
Would CocaCola have taken off it was only advertised as a mixer for use with bacardi instead of a mixer and standalone drink ??
Would Nestle chocolate have taken off if it was only marketed for use as chips in brownies and cakes ??
THINK YOUR BRAND, and then let the mind do the wandering. Remember, especially in recession, that when one market is down 2 or 3 are up, so where do you want to be ??
That is why multi-product multi-market companies with non-competing products fair well in recession.
Do you ??
Do not become a one product one market company - that is a recipe for disaster and unless very lucky will just become a statistic....
Perhaps I should be setting up a Marketing Consultancy !!

The alternative is to not have the discussion - period. That surely is to the detriment of all as it could be said that any OP could be wanting to grind their axe and then there would be no posts allowed without initial vetting by the Mods as applies to some forums.

Domino, I have just read your signature. That is so hurtful, how could you be so cruel.

I agree, the rules are there and should remain - it is a large part of what makes the forum. But so long as the Mods are not having to delete advertising and posters know and understand the rules, where is the harm in having a discussion.

It's good to read a comment from someone who knows what they are talking about.
You have just confirmed everything I have based this on. With many property owners, business owners and residents, from different countries not only the UK (a surprise to some), there must be more thought put into the way these people are made aware or even interested in the services offered. Multi lingual and multiple country view-ability appears the way forward, to me anyway.
Free advertising was mentioned earlier and although there doesn't appear to be anything to lose, I have found that many have repeat adverts and some that you wouldn't want your children to stumble across. Not inviting to many users.
Value for money is a big part of any business and access to a service, for those already struggling is also very important.

it is a statement I heard whilst in the UK last week - on Radio 4 IIRC (don't listen to much else on the radio) and it has been going round in my head ever since.
and it is a sobering thought as I spent some time trying to prove it wrong whilst listening to a playlist on my computer from the 60's

Unless of course their advice was totally wrong in the first place, but only you can know that - we hope.

If you're the "shotgun" marketeer you appear to be, then I wouldn't quit your day job.
No sense in paying Google €5 per click to sell instant roast beef & pud dinners to Chinese immigrants to the Ukraine.
Better off to decide what business you're in, who you're selling to, and target them. You'll save a bundle.
