Shiny toilet paper and "the lurgy"

Anyone else remember these or other stuff from schooldays. What was the lurgy anyway? Was it an actual medical condition?

Lurgy is Commonwealth English slang for an unspecified contagious disease, generally one considered inconvenient and non-fatal with obvious symptoms, such as Influenza or the Common cold...........
