What you save on the chemicals is more than offset by the need to run the pump for at least 8 hours a day to generate the chlorine that keeps the pool clean.

Basically, it is a very expensive way of creating chlorine, which is much cheaper in tablet/powder form. Also the electrodes need replacing eventually which are expensive.

I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole!
Fred, I have to disagree on your blanket statement.
My advice to anyone is work out your cubic feet or meters of water, then calculate how long it would take to circulate via pump all your water. Then, you know how long to run a pump for.

My pool guy had a calculator pc program and used this once the inspection discovered my capacity.

I have a salt pool that's 3meters at the deep end, and my calculation was 4 hours a day. Over two years now and all my tests pass every week.

You are clearly happy with your system, but my point was that if you had a low usage pool and chose to run the pump for a shorter time than usually recommended, then the salt water system may require that you run it longer than you would like so that enough chlorine was generated to ensure the correct levels.

Under these circumstances, it would be a more expensive option.

Point taken mate. I don't use my pool that often, but just like to salt swim..
Again, on the money subject it could - be an issue to some.
