I know the feeling!;) I change the car regularly, and started looking around this week, walked into a few showrooms, like VW/Audi where they know us, and three young girls (nearly all the sales people are girls there) approached us during our wander around, all charming, can we help you etc. Had a chat with one about her coming wedding etc, all lovely people. Did a few more showrooms and although I've never been a big BMW fan, as we were passing, thought we pop in and see what was on offer. Walked past reception, dolly bird chatting to her mate, laughing and giggling, no eye contact. Two suits at a desk chatting, never looked up. Had a cruise around the showroom, cars parked outside, nobody approached us, they clearly decided we couldn't afford anything on offer. And like you, I have never been mugged!

Same with me, though I appreciate not been hassled to death the minute I walk in the door.
I think they tend to regard me as something the cat just dragged in, not even seriously considering for a moment wether or not I could hand them cash for every single motor they have on show.
Todays salesmen stupidly tend to judge a book by its cover, which suits me just fine.
I'm just waiting for the day they have me thrown off the premises as a vagrant, then maybe I'll realize it's time to smarten up a bit.

Anyway,I've been through the Beamer and similar stages a few years back, now I settle for something with a good guarantee and reliability rating that definitely does not appear either posh or the least bit attractive to car thieves and touch wood it seems to work very well.

With regard to Tommies publication, it looks like an American publication written with somewhere like downtown Miami in mind, though obviously in todays world similar problems can occur in many other places.

I found the CH4 prog far more interesting and informative.
They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but I must admit there were at least a couple of things on there which might well have caught me off guard.
Well worth watching for those who didn't see it.

Eh, I don't know any offhand, but I dare say I'd try it for a day or two if the Mistresses were tasty enough. :D

Current UK scam, which has been on the news, along with a CCTV clip of it happening, is when a woman returns to her car after shopping, and opens the passenger door to put her handbag inside, as she goes to the boot to put the shopping in she is approached by someone asking for directions, while occupied giving the directions an accomplice goes to the car, opens the door and takes the handbag, then goes away. By the time the woman has given the directions, poaded the goods in the boot and got into the car, they are well away.
Moral to women is, KEEP YOUR HANDBAG WITH YOU.

Much as I hate the scumbags, credit for originality has to be given to the guy who loaded his bag with everyone elses into the back of the bus coming in from the airport.

Who would ever dream that he'd planted a dwarf inside the bag who was able to open it from within, rifle through all the other luggage for valuables, before tucking back inside his bag again ready to be calmly picked up and carried away with no one any wiser on arrival at the hotel.

(Channel 4 last night by the way.)

I missed that, the Dwarf was in the luggage compartment of the coach ?

That's cool :sneaky:

They have been doing that for decades on the Costas.

We saw a woman driving off leaving her bag containing purse, cards etc on the car roof, fell on the deck as soon as she shot off. I guess she put it there whilst she stowed the shopping in the car. We traced her from the details, she was one relieved lady when we phoned her.
I told this before, but regarding the pointing at the tyres whilst you're driving along, it happened to us in Valencia. Couple of youngsters in a car, must think we are daft to fall for that old trick, so kept driving. It was only when another car did the same and the steering went all funny we decided to stop. Flat as a pancake! I don't recommend trying to change a wheel on a busy main road into Valencia in 100 degrees in a hire car where you haven´t a clue where the jack is etc.
After a lot of sweating, swearing, we were on our way again.

Happened to me once outside a ex pat restaurant, nobody helped me !

Its not difficult but I was in my best clothes and I was sweating buckets, my top was all black in the end, not only that we was on our way to Airport at the time.

I suppose its lucky it was all there, the spare & the jack, the hire co charged me about €180 for a new tyre even though the old one was down to the last bit of tread, I argued it with CC company over the cost, the tread and after a long time they refunded me and ive never used them since - Centauro @ San Javier,

Re: Safety for you..

I once did the daftest thing at an ex-pats meet-up in Tenerife.
I drove into the last available parking space taking careful notice of a huge rock sticking out the ground just in front of my car.

After a long walk, a nice meal and a jar or two of the amber liquid, my pal and myself were last back to the carpark, not another car in sight, just a huge open space in front of us, so completely forgetting about the rock I drove forward to turn,.......... for less than 2 meters.

Well for all we were in bother, we couldn't stop laughing at the sight of the front of the car perched up on top of the rock with both drive wheels hanging loose in free air.

Fortunately there were still a few locals in the bar we'd just left and when they eventually stopped laughing at our predicament were able to help us back on the road again.

Luckily no damage was done due to the strength of a good solid sump guard which had taken the weight of the car.

yes exactly Tommy.

For the posters who cannot refrain from finding fault in Tommy`s post, :thumbdown:and dismiss the information out of hand because he has aimed it at women, remember the Jaycee Duggans and the Amanda Berrys of this world.

They were snatched off the streets and kept as sex slaves for years.

So this thread may not be such a waste of screen space if while doing the rounds, it saves someone from the same fate, be it in the US, Spain or wherever.

OK, well if I can't beat 'em (educate) I can at least join them. So in the spirit of the thread enjoy this.

Hi friends and family. I know that with all the psychos out there, we still think that something couldn't really happen to us, right? Wrong! As most of you know, I live in Alexandria, but I work in Lafayette where I stay with friends when I'm there.

As you know from America's Most Wanted TV program as well as the news media, there is a serial killer in the Lafayette area. I just want to let you know about an "incident" that happened to me a few weeks ago that could have been deadly.

At first I didn't go to the police or anyone with it because I didn't realize how serious this encounter was. But since I work in a jail and I told a few people about it, it wasn't long before I was paraded into Internal Affairs to tell them my story.

It was approximately 5:15 am in Opelousas, La. I had stayed with a friend there and I was on my way to work. I stopped at the Exxon/Blimpie station to get gas. I got $10 gas and a Diet Coke... I took into the store two $5 bills and one $1 bill. (just enough to get my stuff)

As I pulled away from the store, a man approached my truck from the back side of the store (an unlit area). He was an "approachable-looking" man (clean cut, clean shaven, dressed well, etc.) He walked up to my window and knocked. Since I'm very paranoid and "always looking for the rapist or killer", I didn't open the window.... I just asked what he wanted. He raised a $5 bill to my window and said "You dropped this."

Since I knew I had gone into the store with a certain amount of money.... I knew I didn't drop it. When I told him it wasn't mine...... he began hitting the window and door and screaming at me to open my door and that I had dropped the money! At that point, I drove away as fast as I could.

After talking to the Internal Affairs department and describing the man I saw and the way he escalated from calm and polite to angry and volitale.... it was determined that I could have possibly encountered the serial killer myself. At this point, it is unclear as to how he gains access to his victims since there has been no evidence of forced entry into homes, etc. And the fact that he has been attacking in the daytime when women are less likely to have their guard up...and what guesture is nicer than returning money to someone that dropped it????? How many times would you have opened your window (or door) to get your money and say thank you.... because if the person is kind enough to return something to you... then he can't really be a threat.... can he????

Please be cautious! This might not have been the serial killer... it probably wasn't... but anyone that gets that angry over someone not accepting money from them, can't have honorable intentions.

Forward this to everyone you know.... maybe they can be as fortunate as I was! Pass this on to friends and family members!
