I hate Ryanair as a company because of that twat who owns it, but to be honest I have never had cause to complain about them at all.

If you take your time with the booking process then there shouldnt be a problem .... its only when you get it wrong that you end up with those excessive charges. I did it the first time I flew with them and it cost me an extra €20, but it was my fault for not reading the site correctly

Also have you noticed that the Monarch site is far less user friendly - you can feel the sales pressure at several points through the booking process.

You cant check in on-line unless you pay an extortionate amount for allocated seating. They get away with it cos everyone is focussed on Ryanair.

How so, my friends just came with Monarch, declined on line to pay for allocated seating, and then got the seats they wanted at check in free

You're missing my point. In order to avoid the long queues, I like to check in online. Monarch will not allow me to do that I unless allocate seating at a cost of £15 per person. At least Ryanair are up front, and tell you what you can do and how much it will cost!

I have however flown with Monarch, boarded late and got extra leg room for nowt but that has nothing to do with online sales pressure.

why do you need to get on the plane quicker for still got to wait for everybody to get on and most the time the plane is half empty and they let change seats anyways

I dont know how they did it then. They checked in on line, didnt have allocated seats, but got seats easily when they boarded the plane

Perhaps they had hold luggage which they paid extra for: I don't think they are fussy as long they manage to get extra money out of you.

Well maybe they were a little confused and forgot that they'd paid extra or, possibly, they managed to over-ride the system. If so, can they tell me how to do it please - for future reference.

Here you go: an extract from Monarch's FAQ page.

Is there a charge to use online check-in?

Online check-in is free to customers who have paid for pre-allocated or extra legroom seats. If you have not already pre-allocated your seats before checking in then you will be asked to do so during the online check-in process. By choosing your seat in advance you can ensure you sit together with family/friends and there is no need to rush at the airport. You can also take the opportunity to upgrade to extra legroom if you wish. Normal seat fees apply
