Call the nearest desguaces to the car and ask how much they will give you for it, when youve sold it tell Gib that youve permanently exported it

Hi Rotor,

Thanks for the info....

Telling Gb that the car is exported, does that cost anything? The Gib car is on a personalized plate, any idea how we keep the reg?

I dont know much, but I would probably suggest you sort this out on the Gibraltar side. Get it toed back in across the border. Scrap it there, deal with the paperwork there. Probs be the easisest thing to do.

we've heard that you have to pay the scrap yard to take your car! If that is the case there would be no point in paying the grua!

This is a nightmare, we've already spent nearly 3000 euros on repairs this year!

The easiest way to get the right answer is to ring the Department of Transport

The scrapyard picked my daughters up and gave her a few bob for it, but you need all the paperwork and tax paid up to date, and the reg owner has to sign all the docs when they pick it up.

Not sure about the reg plate though, it makes me laugh when I see all the illegal Brit cars around here with personalized plates on, some obviously worth lots of money.
I don`t think the owners realise that they can lose the car and the plates if they have no UK tax on it.

We're fully legal, no tax as Gib doesn't have tax, but fully up-to-date on insurance and MOT, it was our main car until it bloody blew up! it is on personalized Gib plates as my OH is Gibraltarian and bought them when he was younger.... think he has had them near on 25 years now!

JDR are you talking here or Gib ref. the scrap?

We're just trying to figure a way of getting some money out of a crappy situation..... the car broke down in Spain.....so need to figure if it is worth paying the grua to get it back into Gib.....

Doesn't your vehicle insurance include breakdown cover? If so you can get your car taken by grua from wherever it has broken down to eg a scrappie or home or a taller...
Maybe Gib car insurance is different...?

Hi, we broke down in the middle of the motor-way, the insurance co sent the grua and we had a limited choice where to send the car, so seeing as we were near the garage in Spain that mended the car before (different issue, then gear-box now engine!), that plus we were told that to get back to Gib we would have to pay a supp of 85 euros, we chose the garage..... So insurance co will wipe their hands of us now!

When my van died on the Mway a few weeks ago, the grua took it to the taller (via the insurance), then when I was told the van was uneconomically repairable the insurance covered a grua to take it from the taller to my home. I was told you are allowed multiple movements, up to 100km in total, but that once it was removed from the taller to home, they wouldn't then take it away from home...wonder if your problem is because of the border?!

? thanks for the info Hillybilly it may be worth a phone call....

ps. we found out today that there is scrappage in Gib, but we don't get any money nor do we pay any, but that means that there is probably no point in getting it taken back there....

Still looking into scrappage in Spain...

In Spain it's pretty much the same. I scrapped another van a few years ago, got nowt for it but paid nowt either for them to collect the van and they dealt with all the paperwork to baja it. Don't know if a scrapyard in Spain would be able or willing to deal with the paperwork on a Gib plated car tho...?
