Can anyone with young children (under 5) comment about activities for them? Are there playgroups, library events, music/dance groups, swimming lessons etc like you'd get in England? Do children have 'play dates' at their friend's houses, go to themed birthday parties etc?

I'm living in a country (capital city!) where there is hardly anything for young children, which is why my question sounds a bit odd and like I'm coming in from Mars or something. Kids seems to only play with cousins, and it's very rare for a child to go to another's house for a few hours fun. Birthday parties are always just picnics in the park...

And yes, of course the location is my decision, I just wanted some guidance into areas that would fit my requirements: a house (not a flat) in an area with international/private schools. Thanks everyone for their input!
If the children go to an international/private school then they will tend to follow activities set up by their parents from their country so that will be an influence.

But in Spain after-school activities (extraescolares), hiring venues for children's parties in evenings and weekends, play dates, etc... are widespread. Although play dates are between the children whose parents know each other well, otherwise the usual thing is to meet in the park.

It's worth asking the schools and drill down on the intake year as it varies a lot. My son graduated from the British School of Valencia last year and the majority were Spanish, followed by Latin Americans, Asian then British.

My son went to a private school for his last 2 years. Yes, the kids are very isolated from Spanish culture. Although Spanish kids went to the school everyone splits into their mother tongue groups. Russians stick together, Spanish stick together, Chinese etc. The fact that the parents are also not very integrated doesn't help. My son had been to Spanish primary and then secondary so he was pretty grounded in Spanish and had Spanish friends outside of the school so it wasn't a problem for him and he was just there to do A levels for UK university
