No idea if this is the place to ask this, so my apologies in advance!

I'm actually not living in Spain at present, but I have Spanish family. The issue I have is actually with my step-family. I was born in the UK and live here, have a UK passport and really am not at present, looking at moving and living in Spain..

This is a long shot maybe? I'm trying to understand Spanish Inheritance Law, especially relating to 'usofracto'.. Unfortunately I'm in no financial position to be able to pay for a lawyer/solicitor which is what some I think are relying upon (the step-family).

Step-relatives are trying to convince me to sign some paperwork to allow my stepmother who was left everything by my father some years ago via usofracto, to sell one of their flats and basically have the proceeds of that if I agree to becoming the 'owner' of the flat she will be living in until she dies. I'm presuming that this could bring me a number of problems as I don't think that one can do that under the terms of the will. Plus I'm smelling something fishy here possibly.

Anyone able to point me in some direction? They were trying to get me to skype with them and push things through on the day they telephoned me but I think I've bought myself some time by stating it was bank holiday here...

We live in the Basque country, retired; my wife is Basque, I am British.
The house is in her name, which makes things easier. If she dies before me, I have the right to live in it until I die, but then it goes to our 3 children.
You could try a 'notario', but not sure exactly how you could contact one if not in Spain.

I've had some success talking with someone. It still seems strange though.

I can sign the paperwork (its within the law) to agree to the sale of the property although there doesn't seem to be any clarification as to whether I can sign away the half ownership of an apartment. When I made the verbal agreement to sell the flat with my stepmother, we had agreed to split the proceeds equally. However, now they want to do this other thing whereby I sign away ownership of half that flat and sign to say that I own the other one outright. THAT is really part of the bone of contention. I know that she needs money to live and pay for doctors, but she gets her UK pension (she worked here for many years until she retired) and a private one arranged by her ex-boss.
