The campaign to get people to adopt unwanted dogs rather than buy puppies from breeders or pet shops is having an effect.
In Spain, more dogs are now adopted (38%) than purchased (35%), according to a recent survey of 7,000 dog owners.
Of course it could be because of the cost, but I would love to think that attitudes are changing in this highly frustrating country!

Either way, it's all for the best.

No there aren´t any protectoras around our way, unless they take them to the perrera. The charities do all they can but it can never be enough. The campaign may be having an effect in a small way but we have a long way to go.

Yes they are very stretched and always in need of volunteers and adopters, but they won't turn away an animal in real need. My two podencos came from Kimba, I was only supposed to be fostering them, but I brought them up here when I moved to the farm and they are part of the family now.

Full list of refuges all over Spain here, but I don't know how up to date it is.

If you are still in Chiclana, there are two near you - Refugio Kimba and Final Feliz.
