The dog that was referred to at the start of the post was still there in the summer when my friends stayed.

I took an immediate liking to it when I saw it, its a lovely creature. What REALLY annoys me is that the owners leave it alone all the time. I rarely saw the owners. When we were there, I saw them briefly and they were hardly there in the evenings, in what is a second home. I think that the gardener comes in regularly and feeds it. And I suspect that they have some sort of auto feeding device + water for it.

Annoys the hell out of me - it is terribly lonely - it spends days alone. And the truth is I wont complain about the owners as the whole system in Spanish and the hassles would not be worth ot and I suspect the dog will be treated the same for ages anyway!

I was told that the Spanish don't treat their dogs well. The only Spanish people I know with a dog love him to bits, and have a place in CE and have posted on this thread!

PS the gardener cleans up after the dog, by shovelling it up and throwing it over the wall to the next door.

Actually you are quite right - I make a point of talking quietly to the dogs and they don't bark at me as they seem to recognise that I'm not a threat. It is other folk who try to ignore the barking and scurry past that seem to cause the biggest upset.
The other day one of the dogs got out somehow and was running around the carpark, chasing cars and barking at one and all. I tried to contact the owners but they were not at home. I'm sure that a dog running up to kids would be quite frightening.

The dogs have gone. Peace and quiet has descended :) All we need is to get rid of the noisey kids and it will be paradise (only kidding)

Rumour had it that the dogs had done so much damage to the property that the owner refused to renew the rental lease.
Actually, in the meantime, whether by accident or by applying good dog psychology, the wire fence had been covered in green material. The dogs could still see out but now could see the boundary of their 'territory' did not include the card park and surrounding gardens and they actually barked far less.
I also invested in an ultrasonic barking controller - I don't know how effective that was cos I couldn't hear it!

We got another b.......y barking dog - it's across the road in one of the villas overlooking the driving range. It barks all the time. It seems to be left alone in the garden - sometimes day and night - and it barks all through the night sometimes. We have to sleep with all the shutters down and the aircon on (it must be costing us a fortune). I suspect that it is there as a guard dog as the property is left empty a lot. It's a bit pointless as it barks all the time so how do you know if there is an intruder? Perhaps it's the deterrent effect. Anyway, asking the owner to stop it barking is unlikely to be effective if its sole purpose in life is just to bark.

Just looking back at the beginning of this thread.

Shooting seems to have been the popular solution then.

I have had a similar problem with one of my neighbours, however they are in residence.
If the dog woke me at 3 am I went and rang their doorbell and woke them.

It took three occasions and I received plenty of verbal, but it solved the problem.

However you say the owners are not there

There is a gadget that you can buy - it sends out a high frequency sound that only dogs can hear. It senses the barking and sends out this signal. Im afraid I dont know the name - but a friend has one and says it works fine (after a little time). Its also 'humane'

Maybe someone on the forum knows its name.... if not I will ask.

I do find the way the Spanish treat their animals to be cruel at times... dogs left for ages alone, horses and donkeys hobbled etc.....

I believe hobbling is now illegal in Spain, much use the law is though.

If you go to Amazon there is a range of products, however the distance they work at is probably too small.

the place I bought mine from was www. primrose .co.uk they have a lot of devices mine was about £24 if you scroll down their page I think it is still about this price not too sure how good but it seem to have quietened the dog above me or maybe my imagination

I already have a machine -it's called an 'Acquiesce' - which I used for the next door dogs. I'm not sure if that caused them to move :rofl:. However, I think the current problem dog may be out of range as he is about 150m away. Actually he is a nice dog when under control of his owner. I met him in the road and he was a bit of a softy for a Doberman. I suspect he barks because he's lonely when left on his own.

Mike if the owner is not present see if you can aquire his telephone numbers.

When the dog barks particularly in the middle of the night ring him and disturb his sleep.

Great idea, you could say you were just checking they were alright since the dog was barking :D

Might try that with one of ones round me that bark incessantly at times, it is a black and white collie bored out of it wits tied then up when grandchildren come.

Hi :)

The dog's owner is Juan Manuel. He's a very nice guy who probably doesn't know that his dog is so noisy because he works all day in the little supermarket at the Lomas Townhouses.
