breakfasttea,

Thanks for the info, I had looked at these online but couldn't see anyway of adding Pre-Existing conditions. I'll have another look, do you know whether your friends premium were heavily loaded?

We've also been pointed in the direction of ASSSA, has anyone any experience of these?

Kind Regards

Mark

Remember that neither PHI nor convenio especial cover the cost of medicines, for some relatively common ailments - such as diabetes - the monthly bill can easily come to €80-100 and more. Some specialised medicines can cost hundreds of Euros per dose.

My own modest needs for blood pressure hypertension and a thyroid disorder routinely cost €40/mth but of course being in the system I only pay 10% of that. .

A further aspect to consider is that the last minute continuation of the EHIC only applies to tourists so for those resident in Spain but with PHI or convenio especial for any travel outside of Spain full travel insurance will be required and that's unlikely to be cheap.

I am in the same position Mark as I have a Parkinson’s diagnosis,so please keep us updated on your search.I may start looking into Portugal as an option,as I think the requirements might be less stringent. Not my first choice, but cest la vie?
I can’t help thinking that there are a lot more 50 yrs + people with pre existing health issues than are being totally transparent.

An interesting fact is apparently the parkinson cases that developed following the 1918 influenza pandemic people born during the time of this Spanish flu outbreak had a 2-3-fold-increased risk of PD than those born prior to 1888 or after 1924.
I think that the Insurance industry will have to make major adjustments and be under increased scrutiny due to the as yet unknown long term consequences of COVID-19.
Could the EU follow the USA in not allowing a denial of insurance cover due to pre existing conditions?

It seems to me that you should seek more detailed advice from a local insurance company. There is always a way to turn the situation in your favor; you need to find it. The main thing is to be careful with the documents. Employees often make mistakes in filling out and editing. Only an extra hassle will add to you.

Quote..."however, does anyone know if it would be possible to buy an established small business that is already generating an income, allowing us to pay in to the Spanish tax and Social Security system and thereby qualify for the Spanish Health Service without the need for private medical insurance?"

You will still need to apply for a visa and meet all the income and healthcare requirements plus a host of other paperwork and business plans etc.
I was on the understanding that a legal resident who reached UK retirement age and receives UK retirement pension still has the right to the S1.

Steve that applies to anyone legally resident prior to 1 Jan 2021 or a dependant of anyone legally resident pre 1 Jan 2021 is my understanding. If no dependant and one becomes resident after 1 January 2021 then they are out with protection of WA.

Thats correct, technically (unless the goalposts get moved) I will be able to apply for mine in August 2029 as we were here and resident before the cut off 31st Dec. But Im not holding my breath to be honest (although the S1 will have diminishing numbers for the Uk gov so it wont cost them as much in 10 years time as it does now)

Also I think if you are of Pension age before 31st Dec 2020 and you come out now you can still get one as you would be pre-entitled (not too sure about this though)

The thing that seems to confuse people who have already retired in the Uk is why they can't use the S1 instead of private healthcare on their NLV application

The reason being that a Uk resident cannot apply for an S1, you have to be resident in another EU country first to get the form. You need the details from the TIE (or other documents) to apply.

There was a last-minute agreement during 2020 that UK and EU countries will continue to fund the healthcare of its citizens beyond retirement, so anyone reaching state retirement age and moving to EU or UK from 2021 will be issued with S1 or equivalent. The only people who will no longer qualify for S1 are those receiving exportable benefit other than state pension.
