I don't envy the people handling the selection process. Back in the 1980's with a recession at it's worst, I once got 3,000 applications for a clerical post I had advertised - we had to send out over 6,000 application forms so I suppose I should have been grateful that not all of those came back! Shortlisting was an absolute nightmare. That was the worst example but it was quite usual to get hundreds per vacancy - I got nearly 700 for a janitor's post, some of them from highly qualified people. It was heartbreaking to read them, people literally begging to be given a chance.

I've seen this too. When you get 100s or 1000s applying for each vacancy (I'm sure there'll be large numbers applying for the Primark jobs) it may be fairer just to have a lottery.
