I too am a world wide traveller. Halifax Clarity is MUCH better than Caxton. No charges at ATMs (other than 1%) and bank rates. Purchases at bank rates, no charges.

Do the maths on a 2 week trip. £1000 of purchases and £500 of cash. You can even pre-load the HC card with cash so you avoid the 1% on ATMs.

Although in the States every card gets charged at an ATM. Thats not a charge made by the card supplier, it's a charge made by the atm operator Thats made at the point of "purchase"

Other than that, a CaxtonFX card sounds exactly the same as a Halifax, as opposed to MUCH better

I am not sure but think the nationwide card is only "free" in Europe.

There are different Nationwide cards: some charge 1% outside Europe (which is still cheaper than most other cards) but some are free throughout the world.

I have visited France in the past and one friend has showed me a prepaid card called VERITAS Mastercard and he told it was very good. I have googled it and i have seen it has currency in USD,GBP,EUROS but i have never used it. So if you can try it.

Having looked at the details and the currency load on pre paid cards, the Halifax/Santander options look best to me - at least for Spain.
