Right, part one. I have started with the container plants, please note that I have just done a shortlist, it is not conclusive, it is not definative, it is not THE ONLY plants you can grow, but it is a pretty decent list all the same.

I have done all the names in latin, this is because I have no idea what many of the plants will be called in Spain, but the latin will be the same, thanks to the great Mr Linnaeus.

Plants in Spain part 1

Container planting.



Climbers.

Cissus antarctica, Clematis, Cobaea scandens, Eccremocarpus scaber, some Ipomoea,
Jasminum (climbing species), Lonicera, Mandevilla, Passiflora, Stephanotis floribunda, Tropaeolum (climbing species). Wisteria, Rosa’s particularly the rambling types Banksia being a favourite, Parthenocissus tricuspid, Thunbergia alata, Tracelospermum Lathyrus odoratus. Vitis varieties.

Underplanting in Containers is always a good way to conserve moisture, as is a layer of grit, and try to be a bit inventive with the frame work, an old bedstead, some chicken wire, or even an old CD rack can make perfect frames as can a wall, or even the railings to a patio. Why not train a couple of types of climbers to grow together, the blend of fragrances and bloom can be stunning.

Have searched through this thread just in case something has already been posted, it is about geraniums, I have one in a pot on balcony, south facing, it is getting big and want to know:-

a) can I re pot it this time of year
b) At what time of year in Spain can you a) Take cuttings
b) Split plant up
c) How much should I water it?
d) Should I feed it? and if so what do you suggest?

Thanks for the list, very useful, I look forward to seeing the next instalment. I just wish we had some really good garden nurseries around here so I could buy the things I want, maybe you could start a business in Spain :)

One thing they dont so here is to label very clearly, you rarely know which species you are buying.

I have recently planted a Kwi (Actinida delicosa) so far it is doing very well. The one I have says it is both male & female !! so should bear fruit.
Yesterday I bought some Cuphea hyssopifolia, it is very attractive and gives good ground cover, it is also very cheap!
I'll let you know how both of these thrive or not as the case may be

Its important that we distinguish between Geraniums and pelargoniums here, more likely you are talking about pelargoniums, if not then the advice is very different.


They are easily propagated from cuttings, and although quite possible to do it from spring onwards, the best time is late summer to be honest, when the weather is still warm.

As to watering it, I would let the compost dry out between waterings during the dormant season. As a bit of a guide, look at where the plant comes from, in the case of geraniums it is generally South Africa. The weather pattern there says that the plant wont want its feet sat in water, so allow it time to dry out, then water enough to wet the compost, not water log it. During the growing season though, they will drink a lot of water so give them as much as they want.

As for food, they will require a weekly dose of high potash feed, tomato feed is perfect for them, the feed will help the plants from becoming too leafy.

Is it safe to use just ordinary tap water for most plants? Just wondering if its too high in salt ? Obviously shrubs and trees etc will have to be tap water but wondered about pots and tubs? :confused:
