The soil around them needs to be damp at this time of the year and dry in the summer. They go into dormancy in the summer months so don't grow so much then.
However I have watered a new row we put in 2 years ago throughout last summer and they have done really well, I'll post a photo in a moment because they do differ wildly in how they grow.

Will see what happens this year.Suzi

Thank you everyone for all your advice. Fred your photos have motivated me to get started in filling out the flower beds. Will be in the garden centre tomorrow.

Dear Fred you are to be congratulated. Fantastic tres beaux unbelievable. Well done.
Fred when we move we are bringing some stuff with us! Or thought to! One is the true French tarragon and which we grow in pots. It is not the Russian type and thus grown from cuttings. Will they Fred take a liking to the hot weather?
Then I have found near Reading a wonderful supplier of lilly's the best ever with huge flowers and seriously beautiful colours. They grew to over 2m tall.
We grew them last summer and they were just a wonderful sight.
Would these too accept and accommodate high summer temperatures. Not only do we have folks on this forum someone with considerable knowledge of Spanish Tax but also our own Percy Thrower.
Thanks Fred

The tarragon should survive the summer with adequate watering. It's not easy to find French Tarragon plants here so definitely bring it - it's got two chances.
As for the lilies, it depends on the type. Do you know what type they are?

Hi Fred when I get to Spain I will post you a French tarragon plant!
As to Lilly's they come from H W Hyde and Co of Reading winners of gold medals at Chelsea for donkey years. They have a web site and which I recommend but no financial involvement.
They are oriental trumpets.
Thanks once more Fred.

We planted lilies in a spot that was shaded from full sun but still sunny. Watered them every day when the ground looked arid (it always does here!) they bloomed once and reached the heady heights of about 14 inches tall. The second year they came up about 4 inches and then did nothing, last year they never appeared at all.

I looked up some details about that type and they should be OK in Spain. They are not fussy about the soil and will withstand the high temperatures.
The book I usually refer to is a U.S. publication that is written for the west coast of the U.S. where the climate is very similar to the Spanish climate zones.
