Default Planning our move to Spain

Well 4 years ago we decided to move to Spain but somewhere along the line we ended up emigrating to Australia.... lasted 5 months then decided to come back, been back now for 2 years and have decided to go with our first option and move to Spain....... (at least we had a nice holiday)

So at the minute we are at the planning stage our daughter is 14 and is due to start her 2 years doing GCSE so whatever happens we wont be moving over as a family till after her exams, even maybe her A levels......which will mean 4 years.

But one of us will be moving over next August (2008) if all goes according to plan, I did learn GCSE Spanish at school over 20 years ago so am doing a refresher course, my husband is retraining over the next 2 to 4 years as a plasterer as he feels this is his work ticket basically, and me.......well at present I work in a Secondary college as a Learning Mentor/Cover Supervisor I am booked to do my CELTA cse in July 2008 and am now in the second year (September) of my foundation degree in supporting learning. Does anyone know how hard it is to get into a school for employment over there? are there many vacancies about?

We have not decide where abouts in Spain to move to yet, I suppose that will rely on the job situation. Any recommendations will be very much apprecited. We will have to keep the house on over here till our daugher education is complete so one of us will have to rent over there and visit the other one in school hols.........when daughter free.

Any advice apart from doing lots of visits which we hope to do, are very much appreciated oh and we have an English Springer Spaniel to bring with us.......

Thanks in advance.....

HI,

From past responses here, not personal experience, you shouldn't have much trouble getting a job in an international school. I believe plastering is somewhat different in Spain (do it different with different stuff?) so your husband might want to look into that.

Hi there and welcome,
As SJ has said plastering is very different in Spain, but a decent plasterer wont find it hard at all to adapt, it tends to go off quicker and have a very different finish.................that said, I know of a couple of designers now working in Spain who are using the Northern approach to plastering.

The working hours will be very different but the heat you will no doubt be used to.

As MN said, any ideas where in Spain your planning to go?

Hi, we are not particularly bothered to be honest where we go, would like to be close to the beach but not to close but also slightly inland.......rather like the idea of a cortijo or finca but then again........as I said we are only in the very first stages of moving over, we need to come over a few times and check out certain areas but one of the main criteria will be the employment as we do need employment. Husband has an army pension as he served 23 years in the forces and when we do sell the house we will have some funds but nothing major either so definately need some type of work but dont want a rich lifestyle just a happy one......

I think I would also like to be close to the british people over there too.

What kind of work will you be doing? my wife may be looking for work in that line . she works as a pre school assistant now and is currently going through nvq2. do you think there is much call for work with younger children?

Hi. I'm a qualified primary teacher and I'm going to be teaching the Nursery class initially. I know that the school I'm going to has classroom assistants throughout primary (and early years) and Learning support mentors in the secondary department. They have just taken on a full time qualified special needs teacher and a part time special needs support assistant for the primary department. I don't know about other international schools in the area and I'm sure they are not all the same. I know support/classroom assistants are both Spanish and British.
As a point of interest all employees in these schools are entitled to free places for their children. Of course there are additional costs for materials/clubs etc.

wow thats interesting. mrs poolepaul has been looking at prices for int schools for our 2 children, we are thinking of putting them in to int school for first year, so they can learn the language yet still feel at home with the international approach. but its not cheap!!
