Are phone sockets the same ...
... in Spain as in the UK? Wall sockets I'm talking about. In other words, would my phone/fax machine plug into a landline in Spain or should I ditch it?

In Spain.....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_plug
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RJ11,_RJ14,_RJ25
In the UK
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_telephone_sockets
so if you have ADSL they are the same it seems.
Personally I am more confused after reading that lot!

The BS 6312 (RJ25) Plug that goes into a master socket is uniquish to the UK in Europe, Cyprus and Gibraltar have them as well, But used in a few other places around the globe. On most but not all new phones you can just change the lead that plugs in to the phone. The Phone will work with a new lead.
Instead of changing the lead you can purchase a BT431A to RJ-11 adapter like this one HERE
When referring to ADSL stuff it's the socket after the Filter, the Filter will have the local Plug on.
