Seriously though he is right, so go out and buy a helmet a.s.a.p. and wear it do not hang it in the cupboard. In the UK we used to ride our bikes on a nature trail never on the roads and we found that everyone wore helmets for exactly the reason that Mitzy has given.

Rather look like a nitwit than fall off a bike. Trust me .... you wouldnt want a fractured skull. I did it from 10 feet ... you dont have to fall far if the ground is hard

Wear it!
My OH didn't want to wear a helmet when he bought his bike, until I pointed out that if he was injured and not wearing one, our health insurance company might refuse to pay for his treatment. He promptly bought one and does wear it.

No I dont wear a helmet but no do the other cyclists in the village.
Except the serious cyclists from the cycling club that go on the main roads i also keep to the village and cycle routes along the river bank to the next towns etc.
But I did wonder if it is law to wear one

I can't find any hard evidence but when preparing for the Camino de Santiago last year I was informed (by a policeman friend) that by law you must wear a helmet on a bicycle. If you are stopped, apparently they are authorised to take your front wheel until you present yourself at a station with a helmet!

He did also add that neither he, nor any of his colleagues have ever done so.
