I agree with some of the posts on here. The Olympics was originally for amateur athletes and should remain so. I dont think its fair that some athletes have to battle for their funding and rich professional athletes like tennis players can compete alongside the ones that battle for funding.
Most of the track and field athletes today are professional, and command very good fees just for appearing at the meets, and many are competing almost every week somewhere in the world, there are very few real amateurs left in the world nowadays.

remember Brian Phelps used to travel down from London to Cardiff to use their pool for his pre-olympic training at weekends before going on to win a Bronze at Rome 1960. The high board and surrounds were shut off to the public when he was in the building.
