Yeah, you said that right.
Cap, we all know the bubble had to burst. I just query if it is going to be as bad as all the 'Chicken Littles' are saying. It's just that there always seems to me to be a human desire to talk up any problem. |

I see no ships ! Crisis what crisis ? Or as we mariners sometimes say : He was right, dead right as he sailed along But he's just as dead as if he were wrong ! I wonder if good old winston's words will hold true tonight  It will be long It will be hard And there will be no withdrawal ! |
Re: The no Doom only positive comment thread
A few years ago it was dangerous dogs. Then it was bird flu. I seem to remember our kids would grow massively overdeveloped thumbs through excessive texting. And the Teletubbies would prevent children learning to speak.
What these all had in common was they were written in the SUMMER, when all the grown up journalists are on holiday. It is not known as the silly season for nothing. If you get overwhelmed with it just take a cold beer and sit down somwhere comfy till September. It will all look and feel much better then. |

But who is going to take in the spaghetti harvest bigglesworth ? By the look of the trees at the moment it is going to be a bumper one this year and sure to ripen in the next few weeks. |
Re: The no Doom only positive comment thread
A very saucy post El capitan, some may say a load of bol (ognese) :)

Re: The no Doom only positive comment thread
Indeed George and we can swap recipes for the best sauce in town.

Re: The no Doom only positive comment thread
Of all the scares, bird flu is the one with most basis in solid fact. The way we rear and traet chickens, we are begging the virus to hurry up and roll three sixes.
If the genetic shuffle, - which is going on all the time, ever does turn up a winning combination, then the overpopulation fears can be shelved for a while. |

Yeah, a nasty disease. Thankfully it shows little tendency to spread to people.

Its easily spread to humans actually, as someone who lived through the last outbreak with sheep I can tell you that we had to be careful not to get too close to our livestock, and I still have the MAFF paperwork they sent at the time.
Bit of a p*sser to lose your livestock AND come down with a disgusting disease to boot. |

Human Health Does FMD affect humans? Human infections have been reported but they are very rare and do not result in serious disease. Humans can carry the virus in their nose for up to 24 hours and can be a source of infection for animals. Is the human hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) the same thing as FMD in livestock? No. The two diseases are quite different and are caused by different organisms. Viruses from the group called enteroviruses cause HFMD. FMD in livestock is not a threat to human health. HFMD affects the inside of the mouth, the palm of the hands, fingers and soles of the feet, mostly in children. Typical symptoms include a rash or ulcers in the mouth, on the inner cheeks, gums, sides of the tongue, and bumps or blisters on the hand, feet and sometimes other parts of the skin which may last seven to 10 days. Seek medical attention if you think you or your child may be affected. |

Re: The no Doom only positive comment thread
Just speaking to a friend this morning. He's a property developre, and he was in a big meeting with finance people and the like.
Their comment was "We are not in a recession, but we sure as hell are talking ourselves into one." |
Re: The no Doom only positive comment thread
absolutely, bil. US market has bottomed, housing starts up. Doomsters always want to make others miserable. We will not see a repeat too soon of the the growth of the last 15/16 years, but that is very different from a recession.
Only caveat I have is that of course property developers would say that - they need epole to buy, just as government always talks interst rates and inflation down because they need US to lend them money to finance the 600 billion quid they ahve already borrowed and to 75 to 100 billion they plan to borrow this coming fiscal year. 'Put not your faith in princes' has always seemed to me to be the best advice |

Re: The no Doom only positive comment thread
Not So Shocking Crime Figures
I haven’t really been looking too hard (honest) but I sat down to a tea break from painting and came across some more good news pertaining to the recent media uproar over the huge outbreak of stabbings in Blighty. From statistics just published by the Met Police, comparing Jul 07 through Jun 08 with the previous year, in the last 12 months, there were 9,997 knife crimes in the capital. The year before, it was a total of 11,642 so in fact a fall of 14%. Similarly Gun crime has fallen by 14% and youth violence is down by 7.7%. Year to Jul 07 there were 175 murders in London. The subsequent 12 months came in at 154 which is 21 fewer. So, should we keep reading the papers and watching the news to see how terrible it is all getting? To be fair, let’s wait and see how the media handles the new knife crime and murder statistics. <sound of breath not being held> |
Re: The no Doom only positive comment thread
I did hear someone say that if you cut yourself while making toast, it goes down as a knife injury/stabbing.
Have a look at figures for injuries involving trousers! Such dangerous things should be banned! |
Re: The no Doom only positive comment thread
I don't suppose these comments help those mothers who have just buried their children.
Crime figures can be adjusted to tell you anything you want to hear. Car jacking at the traffic lights was flavor of the month a few years ago then burglary and drugs related crime. It so happens a rather lot of people have died in a short time frame which has brought this to the attention of the newspaper editors. |
Re: The no Doom only positive comment thread
Absolutely - it is the silly season after all.
Positive comment - crime IS falling in the UK. Because the buggers are getting locked up! And if they are in the nick they cannot break the law. |

Nary a one will do a single bl**dy thing to deal with the causes, they will all scream about the symptoms. |
