Default New Years Eve in Ayamonte

Hi,

We are coming over to Ayamonte for New Years Eve. I wanted to know what can we do on New Years Night. Are there any parties in town?
Our flight is landing in Faro at 5.30 PM. Will there be a supermarket open for us to be able to buy some food and drinks? How about 1st of Jan. Is it all a stand still or do they have any shops open where we could buy something to eat?
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

If you hurry through customs etc you should get to Jumbo hypermarket in the Algarve Forum in Faro before they close so you can stock up for the holiday period. (take the main road into Faro - turn right off the airport spur). You can't miss the Forum it has a tall building usually with a big picture on the side - and a vast underground free car park.

ASFAIK there are a number of parties being thrown at restos and probably the GC

Also the LIDL in VRSA usually closes 11pm, so with the hours difference that's really late ST... so till midnight 'our time' (Also opens 7am = 8am our time. Very handy)

I dont know NY opening hours - but Portugal Supermarkets are open Sundays so I would suspect they are open NYE... maybe not New Years day... but it wouldnt surprise me if they are open. However Im sure you will have loaded up NYE and wont need to shop on NYD.

Good luck

Jon

PS found a nifty website for 'things VRSA'.. Useful information for Vila Real - Algarve - Portugal The website says open til 21:00, but its wrong see LIDL Procura por loja - Lidl Portugal and put in Monte gordo

PPS was talking to a Portuguese guy yesterday and he says there is an historic tunnel from Castro Marin to Ayamonte. Has anybody heard of this?

Yes I have but never got round to looking for the filled in entrance from the old town not far from me. Ask Tomas in Bar Laguna he was born here and mentioned the tunnel one day in conversation.

Thank you for your replies.

I am actually going to stay on the Spain side, in Isla Canela.

Sorry - I should have made that clear.

Any advice will be truly appreciated.

Which side you stay on does not matter, the information given works for either for shopping purposes and the event info is for Ayamonte :-) The link is handy as there are some good event just over the border in Portugal as well as this side.

The local shops start closing from lunchtime in Portugal ( Algarve )

Do not bank on anything being open after 6.00pm.
We once queued for 45 minutes to get from Albufeira to Algarve shopping.
We have been sat in traffic queues from 5.00pm as the locals and Northerners head for the big resorts to get an early dinner and a good place to view whatever celebrations are happening.

This is the very reason a "Whats on in Ayamonte" thread is needed

Hi Jon,
Remember the "túnel del boquerón"? Here's a recent update with photos:

El ‘Túnel del boquerón’ ayamontino una estructura hidráulica única y con leyenda | Huelva Buenas Noticias, Periódico digital de Huelva y provincia centrado en informaciones positivas

There was "talk" of creating our own tunnel at Marina Esuri, way back when! Apologies for being "off topic".

I bought an Ayamonte T-shirt a few years back.... with Ayamonte written on it and also 'No Necessito Google... mi mujer sabe todo' (SP)

Carol I'll add your name to that too! As ever you have all the info at your fingertips.

THANKS
Jon
