I updated my Garmin the day before driving for the ferry at Bilbao, and it told me to take the third exit on a roundabout, that wasn't there. It then led me off course, straight into a police ambush (not nice, loads of guns pointing at you at 2 a.m.).

I'm using Garmin PC on a netbook. Plotted a route into Portugal across country intending to top up with diesel 4kms before the frontier.
She told me to turn left at the next junction I did.
The she said she was recalculating ( her favourite phrase ) next thing I was in Portugal and have had to pay 1.50 a litre

I'm so pleased I read this before changing from my irritating and next to useless TomTom to what appears to be an equally bad Garmin.

The Garmin's useful but you've got to use your loaf a bit.

I would change the language to Spanish but we get a good laugh from it every time we turn into a new road.

I use a Navigon nearly daily in the UK I believe they use Garmin mapping. The other day it turned me off the main road through an housing estate 5 mins later had me back at the same junction I had turned of the main road at. It then told me to turn left on the main road and lead me to my destination lol. Mainly though it is a great peice of kit.

we have used ours all over the UK france and Spain and on the whole we do get to our destination with a lot less stress than if we had a map also a lot less arguing!!! It does like to recalculate a lot but mostly when we hit one way systems or when my husband decides to ignore what it is saying or pre empt it!!!

whatever happened to those old things called Maps ??

with the cutback in building there can't be many updates nowadays, except for speed cameras - but it is illegal to use such devices for that purpose in some countries IIRC.

In the days before sat navs, using a map, I used to record directions onto a cassette tape. Simple to start/stop for the next instruction. So easy to do and completely accurate.
