Subsidence can be dealt with COMPARATIVELY easily. Heave can destroy a house in a month or two.
Mine were not that big and the soil there more sandy than clay. (However I sure as hell wasn't going to let them grow any bigger)
Otherwise, as you say, I would have been caught between a rock and a hard place.
Removing trees where removal can initiate heave is a very serious matter and should never be considered without full professional backup, structural engineers et al.
