My husband and I are looking to retire to Valencia and live in a house/villa. We would like to live within walking distance of shops/restaurants etc or public transport, where British and other expats live and which is dog friendly. At the same time becoming involved in the local community.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Valencia is both a city and a large region. Which are you referring to?

If you are referring to Valencia City then there are many small towns within a 20km radius that have the type of dwelling you describe. All have good road connections and some have the Metro too.
These were traditionally weekend homes for those from the city. Consequently the style and quality may not be what you are used to.
My advice would be first to identify the town and then look for the house
