If this happened in Spain, you or someone else in your family would have looked after your mother at home, even with Alzeimers

This is expected. There are some nursing homes appearing now, but still very much taboo to not look after your parents yourself

It may be unfair for those who save all their lives, but when you come to the end, then I cant see the problem with selling your house to pay for your care, you wont be needing it again, but you will want a good standard of care!

......i didnt think you were passing judgement, i understand what you were saying................when my grandmother died and i was a child , she had been living with several of her children, (she had 13) then in our home, she just went to bed and faded away in 2 wks, my mother didnt work and therefore was at home with her.............today many women have to work and therefore cant be at home, which is how it is now in many spanish families, from what i have seen - as i said there was more family support yrs ago..............

...................in answer to this, i understand what you are saying, but i have worked hard all my life, and have my home and other properties from which i now earn my income - i have also paid into the nhs system which i dont use much since i have also private health care, which if i ever got sick, would leave my nhs place for someone else...............what i feel here is that my property should go to my children - but again inheritance tax would be levied on this................even though ive already paid tax on the income i earned to pay for the property, - im not knocking this country, we are very fortunate with many benefits others dont have, but the rules and regs sometimes leave a lot to be desired................

I just wonder - in spain, what would be the law regarding a home owner who was single and who went into a nursing home - would they have to pay for it with the sale of their property?

I guess I have some "radical" views on this subject. My parents worked hard all their lives and saved for their old age, they had a big house and money in the bank. My father died, but when my mum became infirm and ill, I felt that this was what she'd saved for! I didnt once question that her money and her house should be sold to pay for any of her care. So, she'd paid into the system, but the system isnt a savings account that you can claim back if you dont use it, its an insurance that, as you get older you need and will use for medical cover etc... not housing or care!

However, I chose to give up a good job and look after her, altho she refused to move in with us (she was possibly the most awkward person on the planet LOL!!!), I used to drive 30 miles after I'd dropped my four kids of at school and playgroup and then drive back to pick them up cook, clean and very often, when my husband came home from work, I'd go back to mums to make sure she was alright. She also had a homecare lady come in a couple of times a week to give her a bath and clean up which mum paid for!

Eventually it was obvious that she needed to go into a home, altho she died a week before she was due to move in there.

Now if you take away the emotion, you could say I earned my inheritance and that if I'd done none of what I did then the state would have taken her money/my inheritance and in my opinion fair enough, altho that wasnt on my mind at the time. For some reason I simply felt it was the right thing to do!

After all this, I finally got myself another really good job and.... my mother in law passed away leaving my very infirm and demented father in law... So I gave up that job too and looked after him until he died!! Maybe I'm just crazy LOL, but again, it seemed like the right thing to do.

I didnt do any of it for the inheritance, but that was the bonus I guess!?

that was wonderful of you Jo, not something i could do when supporting a family and living 300 miles away from my mother - but even had i given up my job to look after my mother 24/7 and not been able to provide for my 4 children, i wouldnt have done it for the inheritance - everyone sees it differently of course but to my mind what i own, i would like to be able to pass on to my children.

Also if there were less people claiming benefits who arent entitled to them, those that need them would be much better off, but the system is much better than before i was born, when they had a means test and wives were thrown out of tied cottages if their husbands were killed say down a mine or on a farm...............we have much to be thankful for..........

I should add that I've never been one of those "do gooder" type people, and I've no idea why I chose to be a carer for my mum or my pa in law, hell, I didnt really even get on with my mum when I was younger!! It just seemed like the right thing to do at the time and in retrospect I'm glad I did, I learnt such alot about them, their lives and indeed myself.

In fact I think I'm quite heartless really cos any money, property I have I intend to enjoy and spend.... and pay for myself to stay in a nice nursing home one day (if I live that long!!!!???). My kids are making their own way in the world! And actually the thought any of them being my carer one day fills me with horror and them too probably !

ya know i said just the same kinda thing on one website and got suspended for a month for being racist - i was actually quoting a newspaper article and my missus is black - i dont blame anyone, whatever their colour, creed - for wanting to come here, with all the benefits they dont have - i blame our government for the unfairness and the bias i see every day..................
