Spain can be quite complex with social security, etc....many ex pats working here do so as self employed, this means you have to pay your own monthly social security! Its not easy for an ex pat to get a job in a bank, a supermarket or petrol station, thats why so many end up working ¨autonomo¨! As mentioned earlier in the thread, there are oportunities to make a go of it here, but you need to take your time,be careful, speak to as many people as possible (here on this forum is a start) find out how long those people have been in business and have in fact lived in Spain, then make up your own mind.......but dont be put off by all the doom and gloom merchants ...in fact, has the OP been frightened off already?
If you retire and receive pension but then start a business - do you have to pay autonomo each month or is there no charge for pensioners ?? ` |

If you start a business then you are not retired. You can either be self-employed or retired

but autonomo is based on paying for social security - that individual is retired and therefore already in receipt of pension and SS.

so now you are suggesting that once an individual reaches retirement age they are on the scrap heap - just like in the old days remind me how big a problem there is with working on the black in Spain as I know a number of pensionista's who are working. so that must be cash in hand. |

that is a different take on the situation you stated earlier,

This would be cheating the system, a little like receiving unemployment or disability benefit while still working :p what is there to cheat, you pay your dues for 40+ years, you reap the benefits, but you shouldn't be barred from working because of your age. but why do you need to pay the full autonomo - if so you are actually paying a surcharge not cheating. I just cannot see why someone should have to stop work at 65 (or whatever). although if all those senorita's with their broom, dustpan, mop and bucket were forced to retire then there would be more work available for the youngsters. ` |

Its an interesting one this one, I have a spanish friend who has just reached retirement age here, he has closed his business to be able to collect his pension, I find it strange he is not allowed to work and collect his pension, he has paid for it over the past 40 odd years??? However, if you are collecting a pension from OUTSIDE of Spain this will not stop you from being alllowed to work here, you will of course have have to pay the monthly social which I think is close to 270 Euros?
the autonomo system is very inflexible - you start paying from Day 1 even if you are still in the set-up period, not advertised, no customers, no money coming in. if you start a company i.e. S.L. then the first named director must pay autonomo. the system is based around paying a) medical b) pension. there is no thought, especially with (even in Spain) where people are living longer, have longer useful working lives that for many reasons they may wish to work. It isn't as if the individual wouldn't still be liable to pay Income Tax. one scenario, as you are saying, could be that a guy owning a business could have to close the company with resultant loss of jobs. although the UK system is much maligned they do not take National Insurance from a guy who carries on working after the State Pension Age. perhaps some more digging is needed on this. |

yes, that is the sort of scenario that makes the whole question interesting.
