Hi,
My boyfriend and I are moving to Palma in October. We are looking for somewhere to live but im struggling. There are some lovely places we have seen but we only want to rent for 6 months to start with rather than signing up for a year and most of the places seem to be for a year minimum. Does anyone know how the rental market works in Mallorca? The only short term lets i can find are holiday rentals which are very expensive!
Any advice is appreciated!!

Why not sign for a year and then give notice one or two months before you want to leave?
That's how most rentals work on the mainland and I'm sure Mallorca can't be so different.

Keep haggling with the agents. A lot of properties are just going to sit empty.
Try after the summer as it will get cheaper.
Have you tried an Apart/Hotel. The receptionist should know any available privately owned apartments for rent.
Also you could try web sites like owners direct.

You won't get your deposit back if you do that. Not unless you don't pay the rent for the last x amount of months (whatever the deposit may be) that you are there.

contracts for any length of time usually allow for either owner or renter to give notice at any time during the contract - usually a month or 2 months - depending what deposit was paid

You should always get your deposit back provided you have;
- Given the required notice
- Repaired any damages
- Left the place clean and tidy
- Paid all outstanding bills

Mmmm, there is a dodgy company in Flamingo square who refused to give all the deposit back saying the cleaners had a terrible job cleaning up the apartment, I know this was a lie as we had cleaned my daughters place up with her.
It is very common here to struggle getting deposits back unless you have a checklist of all the faults to decoration, switches, utensils etc and an agent that checks it at the time of leaving. they also charged her for a broken socket that was already broken probably in 1950 and still broken now, wonder how much they have made out of that. :curse::curse:

sadly a checklist & even photos is a good idea - attached to the contract & signed by everyone
thing is the OP has as much (or as little) chance of getting the deposit back if they give the required notice half way through the contract
I just wanted to corrected the statement by ted1

Thanks for the advice everyone, gives me a bit more of an idea of what to look out for when I visit to search for places in September. Just need to be prepared and make sure everything is done thoroughly and properly i guess!
