1) Have you considered what it would be like living INLAND in spain.? .... Blah Blah...

and that's your diplomatic answer ??

As a resident of nearby Hondón I agree and disagree with your reply... too long to write on which bits. You're entitled to your opinion but most of it is very very subjective !!! Does it not depend on the person, their needs, their health, finances, family... etc ?

What's wrong with Expats playing Golf (or anything else) all day !! isn't that what the spanish lifestyle / retirement is about - good luck to them - I hope I have enough money, health and time to do what the HECK I like when I retire !!

And Aspe ! Well I like Aspe over Novelda on the whole but each has it's pros and cons. Yeah love Elche to visit but wouldn't live near there - too busy for me... but there lies the advantage of picking a residence to suite but is just a drive away from interesting places.

....eat sausage rolls
What the hell is wrong with you people... such prejudice and generalisations !!
All symptomatic of people not getting on because they don't act like 'us'... if someone wants to eat sausage rolls them bloody well let them if they are happy !!! We don't need mini-wars in a community - we choose to live how we want to and as long as we don't hurt each other the world is a nicer place. Eating sausage rolls doesn't make a person less than you any more than eating sorrano jamon !! ... it's just food !!

GOODNESS !!!!! Get A Grit and learn to love each other !

(Note: These forums have a BIG tendency to fall into hostility and sarcasm... again WHY ???) - please lets be helpful to one & other... these are hard times for all.

We got some information from Paintermujer a while ago when we were looking everywhere between Alicante and Valencia. We were very grateful for that.
We have friends living in Benitachell, wanted something that could be more than a holiday home in years to come but did not want the Costa lifestyle. For us, the year-round cheap flights to Alicante were a major deciding factor. We ended up buying just north of La Romana and - so far, touch wood etc - feel we made the right decision; we have Spanish and English neighbours around us, a degree of privacy but not isolation, quiet village life, a town within walking distance and a choice of all the larger towns, beaches etc. within an easy drive. We agree entirely on what has been said though - that it is entirely up to the individual's opinion. A visit and a tour round is the only way to make up your own mind.

And all you told us about the area was just about spot on and saved us a lot of time when we were looking for a house. Thanks again for that

no probs, i'm an observant person! The area and the people around there were just "not our cup of tea", thats all, nothing personal against any of them, it just wasnt for us, but where we are now IS for us!...and we would never have found it without actually being in Spain.

If you are used to living in a city like we were, and having everything around you, its a shock to be somewhere so remote and bleak, i guess you have to go with what you know............

.............or you end up like some people around la romana having the highlight of your week sitting outside bar carlos (and talking about the UK) eating sausage rolls from Amigos (which incidentally are VERY good! The lady who runs the english supermarket in la romana is a genuis in the kitchen by the way, try her cakes, amazing)............

but for us is was most certainly NOT the real spain.

Hey! - what IS it with you and the sausage rolls?! We don't want to start that negative aspect of this thread up again!
But yes, we went into Amigos and had an excellent bacon sandwich and a chat with some locals on one of our early fact-finding trips. There is a place for everything and I guess we will be in La Romana on a regular basis but also stretching out further afield as the area seems to be able to provide such a good mix of whatever we want.

sorry wont mention them again. I was in la romana last weekend VERY breifly, to see a mate about something, and i saw a tray of sausage rolls and out of spite nearly bought the lot so my insane previous landlady couldt buy any, but decided against it.

but yes Amigos is a nice place, doesnt open for long enough though. Breakfast type stuff is good, cakes etc and any home baked stuff is amazing, but steer clear of the burgers they are awful cheap nasty ones. If you want a good burger or a pizza go to "restaurante san francisco" run a brit called steve. Very nice stuff.

anyway good luck.

As it is said that revenge is a dish best served cold, that might :thumbup:have been quite appropriate

yes i know! A pity i didnt as they are VERY nice indeed. Theres a lovely restaurante (spanish and english) i would reccomend you go to for sunday lunch (roast), called "bar pepin" which is Hondon los frailes, another "stepford wives" sort of place (i digress) but highly recommended and the people who run are very nice but book before you go as it gets busy (mainly with British old age pensioners on their way to play golf) but anyway, recommended. There is a cafe next to it also called Tinas but never went in there so cant comment on what its like, but hope that info helps.,,,,,but living around there be prepared to do a LOT of driving.

Well, what a mismatch of comments in here.

Aspe is excellent Julie, so are the surrounding areas. The locals welcome you and nothing is too much trouble.

Yes, everyone's opinion does differ, come and take a look. We have lived here a while now and love it.

All i will say is be careful who you listen to, as if they have to reply with sausage rolls, Sunday lunches and Restaurants run by an English guy and silly pictures, then maybe the area you mention is the wrong place for them. Come to think of it, maybe Spain is too.

There is a lovely medieval restaurant in Monforte and is really good...Mrs Mop and Solgirl have it right, listen to them.

Oh yes, most of the critical comments are from someone that was in Aspe two minutes. Not actually based on a good solid background and working knowledge is it?

actually yes it IS based on knowledge and experience , and also not being self important and up your own you know what.

Aspe is bloody awful and unless you love grapes, or going shopping in mercadonna in the afternoon to meet other English, or hanging around La romana and complaining about the Spanish (ITS THEIR COUNTRY MATE, NOT YOURS!!!!).......

.................... but i agree the SPANISH residents of the town are lovely people. It just wasn't for us.

(as for posting pics on the forum, have a sense of humour mate or are you too worry about not being british old chap? Stiff upper lip eh old bean what what????!!!!!!) (living in the real Spain teaches you to take the stick out of your ass and lighten up a little):confused::thumbsup:

The ENGLISH people around there, or at least some of them are maybe not out cup of tea, that's all, best of luck to them. It was an experience and we are glad we got out when we did. You must understand our situation at that time a bit better and go thru our old posts.

1. We were totally lied to and conned and sh*fted by the estate agent
2. We had a mental welsh landlady who kept threatening us every 5 mins with being kicked out if we didnt "PAAAY YOUR BILLS FOR YEEER BOYO OR YOU'LL BE OUT ON THE STREETS ISNT IT?!" every day, and i do mean a total loony.

.....even though all rent was paid (we lost a 1500 euro deposit when we "escaped which they also pocketed) and paid every bill and the rent down to the last cent......

We were in a very different situation that yourself perhaps?

But alls well that ends well.

Those people are still stuck in the middle of nowhere

Meanwhile we enjoy a fantastic life in a huge house, in a posh neighbourhood, with everything on our doorstep, in one of the most exciting cities in Spain.

And you

Bobs yer uncle!!!!!!
