I have an opinion, but unlike OTHERS on here, I am willing to entertain others opinions.

Now if you are at all interested I come from a staunch Labour family, and I mean Northern Labour, my Grand Father was the head of the Trotskyite party in his area, so I have been brought up as a socialist but to dismiss Maggie as a demon is a joke. She broke the unions, and I don't mean the people, I don't mean the spirit of the people, but the real power hungry, power mad union bosses, little hitlers each and every last one of them. I have seen and dealt with union reps on site, and I can honestly say I can totally understand why some building firms only employ Poles and eastern Europeans, no work would ever get done otherwise.

Ist it ironic that while livestock and hill farmers have struggled like crap for 8 grand a year with no gov help with more farmers than any other work sector committing suicide due to depression no lefty Gurdianista gives a toss eh?

Grown up enough for you?

I didnt say that I believed in the so called Labour Party in fact I said I didnt,
I didnt like the Maggie years she and her cabinet did nothing for us just caused us probelms.
You were stating how good she was and what good things she did for the country.
She didnt cause your generation problems she did mine
And I dont like her and I will never like her

Of course Labour is corrupt. Less so than the Tories tho, that's for sure.

As for the Unions. God knows they were corrupt, and god knows that having got their hands on power, they abused it.

However, just compare the number of years they held such power compared to the number of centuries that the rich and powerful have abused the working man.

Those of us that 'enjoyed' Thatcherism first hand know full well that its mottos were 'Greed is good' and 'Screw the Poor'.

Really? I'm surprised. I would have thought the rush to leave would have subsided a bit. I don't suppose you happen to have a ref for a graph do you? Only I'd be quite interested to see how the rate has varied over the years.

If it's still rising, is it because the baby boomers are kicking in?

There´s a graph here. Both emigration and immigration have gone up with the better communications and easier travel. Only to 2006 I´m afraid but another I saw with 2007 figures showed the same trend.

Thanks for that. I wonder what it was about 2004?

A steady upward rise, by the look of it. As Matt says, given the state of politics (and the weather I'd add) small wonder we are fleeing this place.

True indeed bil leave the house keeping to those who know. I know if you have a leaky roof on your stately pile you do not go out and sell one of your farms to pay for it you raise the money by other means. You never sell assets
they are to be passed on and kept within the family. The more you own the less the bank will bother you if you owe them because of who you are you can take your business elsewhere. Let them eat cake Was it Brown who sold half the gold reserves what a horses ass.

2004 was when the big accession to the EU allowed the Poles, Hungarians, Checks, Slovaks and Baltic states to enter UK to work. 2008 should show a similar sharp downturn as they go home in the face of recession in UK and booming (comparatively) economies at home.
