We went to the beach at Benalmadena on Sunday and it was heaving, we were crammed in like sardines - I didnt see one British person at all!!! Just my lot! The rest all seemed to be Spanish. The sea was really good fun, very rough and great for wave jumping!

As we left, there were a couple in love walking in the road, looking all "lovey dovey" at each other. Along came a car and tooted. The couple moved out of the way and the driver of the car yelled foul mouthed obscenities out of the window at them - Yes, the car driver was British. The only ones we saw all day - and they had to be offensive! Am I proud to be a Brit????

That area will be approx 10 degrees hotter than coastal areas in the summer and 10 degrees colder in the winter.
I'm not sure, but I think there are only a few roads from there to the coast. I know it can be a pain if you are stuck behind a lorry, if there is heavy rain, if there are roadworks, if there's an accident etc. Remember, if you are driving home to/from the coast at night it will be pitch black driving up/down those long and winding mountain roads with no barriers. We have friends who wrote off their car (and nearly themselves) on the road from the coast to AEG. Will you both feel comfortable driving in Spain? I don't know if there are many regular buses from A de la T. It can be madness on the motorways.
Can tell us a bit more of what you want in Spain? Are you going to go out exploring all the time, or potter in your garden? Do you have any hobbies, golf or bowls or whatever? Do you both drive? Do you want to join social clubs? Do you want to rent a flat or villa? Estepona is very nice, near to Marbella, Duquesa, (both have a lot of british) and Sotogrande, not far from Gib, good access to the toll road, which is better if the motorway is too frightening/busy. I would suggest you start with a 3 month rental, which is considered long term and then you can move if the area is not right for you.

Ted1 - We will look harder at Estepona, Duquesaand Sotogrande which we quite liked anyway; we have been talking about a six or even three month let, without letting our home out. Interesting we came to a conclusion today that a three month option may be the better way forward.

We are really looking at a 2 bedroom place small villa, townhouse, or even a country place? Hobbies well we like to watch most sports, not into golf although Richard can play it. Social clubs we would be interested, Jackie loves her garden, which is what she would miss most, walking would be a must, we both drive.

We had our home valued today for sale and rent, we are more than happy with the outcome of that, which is one of the reasons we are looking at three months rental.

Thank you for your post it is most helpful.

And if instead of a donkey, I ride in a Spanish horse? Does the inferiority continue?

I ask it to you because it is a curious appreciation, because I don't know what relation it exists among the inferiority and to ride in a donkey. I have never outlined it, because it is as absurd as to say that a person is a slacker because likes the Holy Week, for example

By the way, already than you speak of donkeys, to tell you that the Spanish donkeys are very strong, many have even been bought for the German army (I suppose that for the teams of high mountain). There are places in those that I recommend you that you use a donkey, because a 4 * 4 would not serve you

We saw some friends on the weekend, whom we new had a property in Spain but not the exact location. It turns out its near Marbella, they have offered to take us out there stay in their place while they show us around the area. We think its not only a good idea but very kind of them

My wife will retire when we move; we have no intention of working in Spain or anywhere after next year. We are looking in the Andalusia area, preferably within an expat community, not to busy but not to remote from others. We have looked on line at Seville, Coradoba, and Riviera del Sol. It is our intention to rent before committing to purchasing. Our interests are all sports, music, food and wine. I am Richard and my wife is Jackie, our children are grown up and left home.

Many thanks

Hi we have lived in spain for 6 years now my biggest regret is not keeping my house in England so it is good to rent first although we hope not to go back it would have been a good nest egg for the future as we have 3 young kids. Be careful of urbanizations they often consist of people with to much time on their hands making up silly rules that you have to stick to. It is much nicer, in my opinion having lived in both!, to find a small spanish village with a few English so you have the best of both worlds. Anyway hope you find what you are looking for Spain is a great place to live and (SNIP). Good luck and learn the language it will help you so much
