Hi All,
I agree with JDR's comments about finding work in Spain. I also agree with HereKittyKitty's comments about how it is possible to make a deal of money in the UK but impossible to hold onto it.
My hubby and I have bought a place in Hondon and, at first, we planned to move over straight away, but thanks to this forum (and to people we have met in Spain) we realised that it is extremely difficult to find work (and we are not of retirement age, so must work to stay there). Many of the people on this forum are already living in Spain so I think we have to respect that experience. We have decided to stay put in the Uk for the time being until we can find a business to buy in Spain (and, no, it won't be a bar!)
I also agree with andyrich666 that living in the UK is, at the moment, so depressing, and with a house over in Spain, it's even more so. When we visit our house I never want to leave it and then we come back here and I end up getting so depressed about living in the UK again! BUT I have met so many people living in Spain who are struggling to make ends meet because they can't find employment.
Like you, Andy, we have lived abroad before, but we were young and carefree and had no money, so nothing to lose! Also like you, we don't just want to 'get by' for a while. We want more than that; we want security, sunshine and a better (and healthier) lifestyle. I always get the feeling that in the UK, especially under this present government, we are paying more and more money for basic services and stealth taxes. The cost of living in Spain is lower, although that may also alter with time, but in Spain I feel that I can at least breathe easily and I don't feel that to be the case in the UK anymore.
It's two years since we began to look for a house; we completed last October and we're still reluctant to make that final move.
One day we will....

Hi, i feel like you too, at early stages at the moment, but would just love to go, but work is a problem and we all need move to live! we have looked into a buisness but as we have never ran a buisness before wonder if it is such a good idea! We are now weighing up the best thing to do, as i would love to enjoy the spainish lifestyle before i am of retirement age. What sort of business are you thinking of? Well at least you have your base which is a start, we need to look into getting that first. any advice on house buying would be great if you could pm me. i would love loads of advice as i don't want to make any mistakes, thanks Donna x
There will be some major diversification but I feel the market in the Uk for me is too competitive now although I have never struggled only improved.
If I can get good finance behind me when im settled in say 2 years, I then will consider opening a small car hire company, that might sound a massive task but I don think it would be too much of one. Im sure there will be some red tape to overcome but I expect that with anything.
I think the main thing is when you get there is you have to try and live a normal everyday life as possible, sometimes that means shutting yourself away, otherwise you could easily treat it as one long hioliday and then your skint before you know it, thats what happened to me ages ago, but that would have happened where ever I was, I just didnt care in those day's. When your young and have good lumps of money and piss it away, sometimes you can get sober and get it back.
I am quite focussed on earning good money now and I admit I feel a drawback of going to Spain is the better social life ( here I have none at all ) and that does worry me a little.

I just plan to stick with my own business and try and intergrate it over there and keep my UK market as a constant source of early income. I will have to tell a few white lies to keep on track but once settled I feel I can then progress further in Spain and to the Spanish market, I feel that will be slow going though but I know whatever I stick with I know I undercut people massively here, so I 100% sure I can be even cheaper there.

We have lived in Spain for 10 years now and when we first got here we worked for other people doing various work from cleaning to sales.
2 years we set up our own business and it has gone really well - my advice with moving to any foreign country is to have your wits about you - be prepared for shocks - be prepared to work harder at the start than you would at home - this being due to the many language barriers that you will come across in your day to day life.
We did not start a Spanish company but we have an English company and pay all our taxes there.
You would need a lawyer to help you with starting a business in Spain for all the logistics with the law and what you have to pay and when - this is the reason we decided to keep everything in the UK - we understand how to file our tax returns and know the law regarding running your business and paying your stamp etc.
We will eventually move everything to Spain but so long as you pay tax in one country you are not breaking the law.
We have a great lawyer if you wanted any numbers
The following website also has some good advice for moving/working in Spain

All the best and good luck

so many people seem to have had enough of the UK. I seem to know a lot of people personally too whom have made the move to Oz from around these parts.
We are now feeling the long reign of a Labour Government in Britain.
I certainly never even imagined, nor would have wanted to live in another Country at one time - how things change!

A few years ago we looked into buying a house in Casabermeja so that we could run an Astronomy hotel (my husband is a keen Astronomer) - we spoke with our lawyer about this and there are several regs surrounding opening a B&B/Guest House - we have stayed in many guest houses/B&B across Spain and not all of them have been run by Spaniards - you need to find out the law - get your licence and then have an accountant help you because there are some good work arounds for earnings and what you can claim also
Good luck and enjoy

The double taxation treaty between the UK and Spain means that any payments you've made in the UK can offset tax liabilities in Spain, but this doesn't mean that you can simply choose to pay your tax where you want to - otherwise we'd all claim to be in the UK because it's a low-tax economy.
So, you are breaking the law.
Worse, if you are ever caught, then you need to be aware that capital gains, etc rules (from, say, dealings in UK property) may mean that any retrospective claim by the Spanish tax authorities will be far worse than if you'd have planned your move up front.
