Parsnips(Chirivias) can be found autumn and winter at El Corte Inglés supermarkets in Madrid. I was told that they are grown for animal feed here in Spain but that seems such a waste.
Some years ago I used to buy Spanish parsnips in the UK and bring them back here. It was great fun going through airport security as I had them in my hand-luggage and when they showed up on the scanner, they looked like sticks of dynamite. So then I used to put them in the trays along with my jacket and toiletries, which provoked much amusement among the other travellers.

Recently my local Carrefour has started stocking them and this year they have been very small and delicious. Yesterday I also saw swedes (Nabicol) for the first time in Spain, also in Carrefour.

Sometimes in the Stew/soup veg packs in the supermarket you see a tiny bit of swede and a parsnip. However mainly they seem to have a small whit turnip thing that to me tastes of nothing. I'm not a great lover of parsnip the wife is. I do though like swede especially mixed with carrot mashed with plenty of butter.

And best thing of all, I'm not bothered about those extra couple of pounds I've put on 😋 Enjoy......

I do my roasts in the air fryer (Ninja Duo), makes superb crackling!

Haven't tried Yorkshire pudding yet.

The only thing the oven gets used for now is keeping warm or occasionally warming plates if I dont have a saucepan on the hop to warm them over.

Plate warmers in the microwave. They work a treat.

Ooh sounds like an idea. My tabletop oven has an air fryer basket & setting which does great chips, so when I move back home I'm thinking of getting a proper air fryer. I adore roast potatoes, so is there any particular knack to air frying them? Just parboil before-hand as normal?

I still cannot quite fathom why a chef thought he had produced a roast dinner. He's a chef.

Agree, also his programme is called the Cooking School or something like that, I forgot to check properly and only saw it in error.

There is no real need to parboil the roast before putting them in the airfryer. Preheat airfryer to 190, dry spuds and add a light coat of oil and any seasoning (i use ground black pepper) to the potatoes and cook for 25 minutes, perfect every time 😋

I'm enjoying this thread! Reminds me of a Brit expat who was longing for some horseradish sauce and couldn't find it anywhere, so decided he'd grow his own! This was in the early 70's in Toulouse France. The chap was our team-leader, a real 'Bungalow Bill' character - I real bungling idiot!
So he grew his horseradish, and yes it was successful. Too much so, as it crossed over from his small garden onto the neighbours on both sides which resulted in frequent clashes with them as he couldn't keep the plant roots under control. Myself and other team members wishfully hoped that the neighbours would challenge him to a duel. Unfortunately they didn't, and probably just as well as they wouldn't have stood a chance armed with their muzzle-loading flint or percussion-lock single-shot pistol versus Bungalow Bill's .577 Nitro Express 'Elephant' shotgun!

This weekend we have son, daughter and hubby plus grandchildren here for lunch and I'm doing a roast pork loin dinner with all the trimmings and I'll make a cheesecake for 'afters' but if its just the wife and I I'll cook whatever we fancy; last Sunday I made lamb stiffado with coriander rice.

Food tastes in the UK have changed dramatically these last twenty or thirty years.

PS, Cod and Chips? cod, chips and mushy peas near me in Wales is £11 or more so £40+ for a family of four...the chippies are struggling at the moment.

I remember cooking a roast Sunday lunch for my Spanish mother-in-law (RIP dear lady, best tortilla ever) she watched me make all the preparations etc but the thing that amazed her most - 'Now what's he doing?' she asked my wife when I put the empty plates in the oven to warm - she had never seen this done before and it highly amused her.

Also - She also could not understand why there was no bread with a meal in a Chinese restaurant - she never returned!

Lovely story, thank you. I do not know any Spanish people who heat plates. They do have a tendency to allow their food to cool quite a lot before eating it, too busy chatting usually to manage to eat while it is hot!!!!!
